no... it is not old engine vs modern engine... what you want to check is wet sump vs dry sump... plenty of modern engines uses old wet sump design...
if your car has a long dip stick... you have a wet sump... if you badly over fill and cause crank counter weight to "churn" the eo, you will lose power and vibrate more at high speed...
of course excessive over fill is problematic, a bit over the dip stick dot is ok... engine designs have built in tolerance for such things...
