Finally got the prompt message for region change. Activated and loaded some money into the wallet. All went smooth with verification submitted for the 4999 limit.
I think most if not all should get already the wallet for malaysia right ?
*
Yeah, thanks for alerting here! I got it here too after seeing your message. No "red dot" to indicate new feature. I will verify later. rclxms.gif

Add on: Too bad BigPay no longer can be linked with WeChat Pay. sad.gif

Since it can longer accept BigPay, I don't see excitement with this as I don't have a debit card literally.

Well, I do have a debit card but I set the transaction limit to 0 to disable the feature. I'm more of a credit cards user. laugh.gif

May I ask, are you saying if someone give you angpau, you will have Wechat wallet even though you don't have China bank card and China phone number?

If yes, how to do that?

Thanks

On my Wechat and when I search Wallet, it show a Yuan Wallet and not able to use because no China card and number.
*
Yes. I don't know how I did it but I already got it since 2013.

If someone from China want to send me money, is it possible if I don't have a China wallet?
Also if they send me angpow, can I withdraw it? I'm not sure how this works.
*
I think when they send to you, it auto activates your China wallet.
No, cannot withdraw unless you have China bank account.

Nice to see you are also curious and looking at trying Wechat Pay. I am also in the same boat you are. Gonna add a credit card and try it out.
*
No, you cannot add credit card into WeChat Wallet.

Sorry have to ask this question. If I have a RM wehcat, can I use it in China paying China vendors in Yuan? Are they interchangeable, if there is such a thing/term?
*
Nope, not possible.

Thanks. Then I guess I am out of luck because I don't have China card and China mobile phone number.

So how do tourists tackle this wechat wallet thing in China?
*
I can use my China wallet without China phone no. and China bank account, I just need my China friends to transfer angpau to me. Been using since 2014 though got it in 2013.

question: any charges if i transfer fund from MY to MY via wechat? in china version is free.
*
I supposed it is free. I don't see why it should be charged.
Anyway, I didn't proceed with verification because it only accepts debit cards. laugh.gif

rclxms.gif  its convenient when go out lunch, just scan QR then pay the divided bills to colleague. maybank also can do it but good if all can use same UI like wechat.

debit card good ma. credit card maybe will charge u extra fees
*
I don't like to use debit cards. tongue.gif
My debit cards have 0 limit for debit and only used them as ATM cards.

I'm a die hard fan of credit cards and e-wallets but not linked with debit cards. laugh.gif
Been using WeChat Pay in China. biggrin.gif

BigPay is not Malaysian?

Can u link a Malaysian Credit Card? Or only Malaysian Debit Card?
*
I can link my Malaysia CC to China wallet but serves no purpose, cannot use in China. Only China cards linked or angpau in RMB can be used in China.

Since there is no way I can get a Wechat China wallet, can we use Alipay instead as a tourist to China?
*
Hmm. Only if it's AliPay China account I guess. I didn't have the chance to use earlier as I cannot verify account but I have "semi-verified" my account without China card. Earlier I can't receive from and transfer fund to AliPay users. Now I can receive and transfer fund (using existing money in my wallet) to my China AliPay friends. I haven't gone to China again this year which I usually do annually due to my different business travel schedule.

Is Alipay as widely used as Wechat for taxi and street vendors etc in China? Got to find a way for China usage.

While I do have a China bank card, I don't have a China mobile number.
*
Yes, they co-exist with each other, whenever AliPay is accepted, WeChat will be accepted too. Hence I survived without AliPay in China. That's what I want to see happening in Malaysia and not tonnes of half baked e-wallets. doh.gif

Any China friend's  phone number? Shouldn't that mobile number be the one registered with the China bank?
*
Just ask the friend to buy you a new no. I used to have one number too and my friend forgot to pay for my monthly access fees, eventually got terminated. : Then I noticed only certain big telco flagship shops in bigger cities will entertain foreigners application, other places won't accept.

Luckily I activated my wallet years ago, no need all these. Didn't know it is so difficult these days.

Cannot top up China wallet with BigPay, it serves no purpose.

Not sure is true or not...so far I only found this new feature on ios device.

I have another account using android wechat with Malaysia Wallet, but still not found the "ang pow" is activated...
*
I already seen my activated for my device, Android device. At first I only saw my normal RMB angpau then went and switched wallet to MYR, came back and reflected angpau currency in MYR.

It's not that they need more merchants, it's that they NEED merchants, so far there's literally no merchants that accept it. You might see some stores actually have the Wechat Pay sticker, but it's in Chinese, doubt it's gonna work with our local wallet.

No "red packet" on mine btw.
Wechat already gave up on their head start, they could've started everything when there was hype, and now the hype is gone, they still keep leaving us hanging on waiting since like forever.

What I hope now is Boost can expand to more mainstream merchants which they are doing right now, better if they can collaborate with most supermarkets, fast food chains (now available on Wendy's and Burger King) and convenience stores (available on KK mart), once they can do that then it's a straight goodbye to Wechat Pay, they can keep slacking off and do nothing if that's what they wanna do.

As for Grabpay, they're also expanding aggressively, but doubt it can defeat Boost cuz not everyone uses Grab. I do use Grab occasionally, but don't think I'm gonna try it.

So far, the best e wallets are Boost and Favepay.
*
OT: GrabPay not for Grab rides only. I used it so far to pay TeaLive, Eggette and Devi's Corner.
I also use Boost quite extensively.
