Rule of thumb; if you need the card NOW buy NOW, if you just wanted to upgrade just because you have money just DON'T.

It's literally raining GPU in Garage Sales selling cheap prices even 1080Ti. If the new gen were indeed faster than old ones, you need to think about the price too. For some reason shop still thinks GPU mining is still a thing and prices were simply RIDICULOUS.

I am afraid of sst... Hope it wont Influence the price. Bought whole new rig but without gpu. Still using gtx 660...

In that case, better regret buying than regret not buying laugh.gif

hmm, is mining dead? saw bit coin price on lowyat home page still damn high.

And there's possibility that the miner selling out their GPU now is prepared to build the next gen mining machine.

Mining is DEAD. Difficulty plus competition from ASIC miners makes it dead. Everywhere you can see the price stabilize back to MSRP except in Bolehland.

Vega 64’s price is just slightly lower than cheapest 1080ti while only slightly faster than 1080, not to mention power consumption through the roof.

If the price is slightly cheaper than 1080 then the power consumption won’t matter much anymore

Vega 56 is better but still, theres no competitor for 1080ti

I use Vega56, clocked the HBM speed to match 64 speeds and performance is great within few percent off its bigger brother. Core clock didnt really matter because even under water not many can pass over 1800MHz. I dont even need to flash to 64 VBIOS, just edit powerplay table in registry to 64 one and I'm done. Runs cooler too because HBM voltage is lower on 56 VBIOS. HBM runs better at lower temperatures as it adjust timing depends on how hot it runs.

Vega power consumption is high because AMD binned their voltage at crazy level to let some lower yield ones to pass. Most of the chips runs fine when undervolted. Undervolt it is peanuts and cut down huge power and heat.

I know most people wont buy because of the price. Its not competitive against nv's offering. With RTX coming up, the older Pascal cards price drops massively. 2nd hand market filled with very cheap 1060's, 1070's and even 1080/Ti's. Prices of AMD cards in Malaysia is crazy because of miners tax. Shop still charge like mining is still a thing. If you look at Amazon prices were a lot better than local shops.

Truth to be told, I'm not impressed with RTX lineup. People that uses 1080Ti going to hold to their cards. I dont think in terms of raw power it will beat 1080Ti by a large margin, but the costs nv charge for their new cards is simply ridiculous.

too much things to do just to improve the performance of vega56

on geforce 10 series its crazy simple. Install afterburner and set some sliders. Done.

I’ve used R9 290 so I know how the traditional overclocking of AMD works. Need to play around voltage to find the best performance and power consumption, as well as the best clocks for stability.

On Nvidia it’s all automatic, you just set the end target parameter and done. Easy power limits, temp limits, core clocks, memory clocks. No need to play around with stability. GPU boost 3 automatically apply appropriate voltage etc.

Not to mention even after overclocking Nvidia 10 series, the added power consumption is not big. My overclocked 1070ti only around 3C higher than stock. So no need to deal with annoying louder noise from the fans trying to keep the gpu within the temp range.

I said just by bumping HBM2 clock to 64 speeds I get over 95% the performance of 64 laugh.gif Undervolting is just simply punching lower number than the default and you done. Overclocking the core don't net much performance increase, the HBM2 clock is more important.

The powerplay table is optional if you don't want to mess with any software. Just run overdriveNtool, open PPTable editor, load Vega64 VBIOS and click apply. DONE biggrin.gif
