You're right, I've never really thought about this until you guys showed the performance numbers to compare. You go benchmark 3440x1440 on certain games already similar performance as in 3840x2160.
And ultrawide, especially a 3 screen setup will let you see a wider FOV compared to a 16:9 4k.
So the GPU have to render the scene on the far left and right which otherwise isn't rendered if using a 4k monitor.
It is like playing with the FOV slider - a narrow FOV will definitely boost performance.
