your points are spot-on about our current mkb community.

mkb is a general and over-simplified marketing term now, nothing related to what a true mkb community is after. hence, most users have a very shallow knowledge of mkbs, established based on marketing, and over-glorified yet crappy prebuilts. (.. and most of them thought they're very good already) however, some of these users will eventually realize the obvious differences, and start to appreciate true values of the actual mkb community.

still, i'm pretty optimistic about our mkb community smile.gif

yea, but IMO, most of the work is mainly on programming instead of electronic hardware design.
pretty tedious to write functional and non-chunky code for embedded devices laugh.gif

haha funny my friends who build their own smart watches with all those sensors told me the same thing

i don't know what they are doing, but i know i can get helps if i'm stuck with soldering issues on my boards haha
*
gigantic smart watch or they managed to miniaturized it? biggrin.gif well, first it runs off battery, means whatever it does, means the software has to be as efficient as possible

haha! I wished I had friends that I can trust soldering jobs laugh.gif

ya bro

still looking for keycaps seller that has a wide range of variety

the few ones suggested here

macam very little choice sad.gif

if only they can be like royale sporting house, many shoes to choose from
*
just get them from Taobao, plenty of choices icon_idea.gif personal fav are PBT keycaps from EnjoyPBT. p/s: the keycaps might cost more than your keyboard

well, its a pretty niche hobby

any keywords to type?

so far i only try keywords like mechanical keyboard keycaps LOL

but the results bring me more of a full keyboards than just keycaps alone
*
I attached a list below. use Chinese to search for relevant results such as "ABS 键帽" "PBT 键帽" "EnjoyPBT 键帽", etc

nice one bro

if outemu switches?

compatible with cherry mx right
*
yea, they have the same stem, shouldn't be a problem. if your keyboard layout is the standard one, then you can change your keycaps without worrying much about some weird layout where the keycaps are almost non-existent laugh.gif

set 1

set 2

this r some of the soldering iron sets i found in lazada.. will these do the works or i should find others?
*
Should work fine. Even if the iron doesn’t perform to your expectation, just get a 35W Hakko soldering iron from Jln Pasar.

My priority would be something like this: top quality soldering lead > high quality soldering flux > variety of soldering iron tip (Ori Hakko or better, with different pitch and shape) > soldering iron itself (doesn’t really matter, just switch out the heating element if any element)

what does soldering flux do?
*
Used to clear the oxides and helps “wet” the solder better. Basically, solder lead do have flux inside their core, but usually I prefer more flux for certain applications

personal favorite:
soldering lead = prokit
soldering flux/paste = burnley

thanks a lot for the tips and suggestions smile.gif

.. and it's time for me to get a more proper set also.
*
sure no probs. don't apply too much solder flux though, because you would have to clean it up with IPA solution.

QUOTE(kraziekd @ May 14 2018, 10:02 AM)
thx for the info smile.gif
another question.. the soldering kit on lazada I provided above, will the solder sucker comes with the set would do its job desoldering switches without any problem?
*
can't really comment much on desoldering sucker. I generally don't use them, I only need a fine pitch tweezer and a soldering iron, even for desoldering laugh.gif

however, try not to buy/use those "high power" sucker. if you are inexperienced with it, you might even suck out the whole pad, which might render your PCB useless laugh.gif laugh.gif

Oh yeah, kinda reminded me that with inexperience, overheating the area plus high power sucker will damage the pad.  sweat.gif
*
ouch, that would probably need some manual routing to save the PCB sweat.gif but it's a pretty normal mistake during desoldering

Just in case anyone wants to know, you will need to short CC to GND using a 5-10k ohm resistor. Similar to micro-USB OTG, where you short ID to GND.

Note that I haven't tried it yet. Still in research phase.
*
need to short each CC pins to GND with 5.1k resistor for the host to be able to recognise it

reprogrammed tokyo60 r1 to have a layout that is more comfortable for me to type on. (hhkb layout is interesting but need time to adapt)

for space bar, i use the 7u from c3. the rest (2u) i use cherry screw-in. currently i'm using lubed gateron white 67g.

this is a good modular board.

nice seeing a random tokyo60 in the wild biggrin.gif planning to make some big update to the next version of tokyo60 after completing the upcoming 40% brows.gif

is it possible to convert solder switch to hot plug switch ?
*
Heck no laugh.gif unless you fancy clamping down your PCB and drill holes with CNC, superglueing every hot swap socket to the newly created holes and finally hot wiring the entire switch matrix to the controller by hand.

How’s the EPBT 9009? Just bought a R4 set this morning, couldn’t get it to ship by air due to some weird restriction from the official TB courier

right. filing stab housings make more practical sense.
it's the typical enjoypbt quality in terms of material, with smooth top surface. this loosed set is r1, so it has some keys with less optimal legends. r3 is much better. thinking of getting r4 also hehe

yes, the availability of TB courier service by air are sometimes turned off for access.

been wanting to have a set for a long time until I saw there's still a handful of set available on kbdfan page, instead buy laugh.gif

wow, that layout laugh.gif TBH, this is the first time I seen someone using such layout although I designed them to be as flexible as possible. I always map navigation keys to awsd for my 60%

oh?could you elaborate more on this? I was kinda surprised when I couldn't ship nylon screw, nuts, keycaps, electrolytic caps by air but other electronic component, tweezers ships just fine hmm.gif
