Did you guys ever calculate how much have you spent on the system (body, lens, flash, etc). I'm an extremely newbie (exactly 1 month of owning a DSLR), so far have only added a zoom lens, a prime lens, additional 2GB CF card and a wireless remote controller. Total spent about RM4k+ only.
Have a few things hope to add on to the system such as flash and better lens. |

QUOTE(goldfries @ May 8 2007, 12:16 AM) About a week ago a shop in Penang quoted me 580EX (not 580EX II) for RM1620 and the boss said can still further reduce the price if really interested. I didn't buy it because wanted to wait for the 580EX II pricing first.Added on May 8, 2007, 8:20 amMy intention for starting this thread is not for showing off. It is because after reading a Hong Kong camera forum which has a similar topic, the newbies in the forum actually have a sort of idea of what to spend and what not to. I actually learnt a lot from that forum and hope to give some idea to our newbie here the same idea too. This post has been edited by macg: May 8 2007, 08:20 AM |

To be honest, I'm not using Lowepro either but a backpack given to me during my camera purchase and a cheapskate tripod because I like its light-weightness. As for the flash unit, its an useful item if most of the photos are indoor and it will also improve your outdoor potrait photos too.i still dun have Lowepro bag (using old SLR back now |

Lens value is always there Ps : I am also a few months newbie |

I use those bags you find at Children's dept to put milk bottles. BOught a big one from Jusco. Lots of compartments , just the not that well padded but taken care via a thick and soft t shirt which acts to protect my camera body + lens during light drizzle.
to be honest , the investment on other accessories are those which are seldom accounted for. e.g. Dry Cabinet |

Well, for DSLR you tend to have more than 1 lens , leaving it unutilised. I doubt there would be any difference in fungus growth as both has machanical and optical elements. |

now to think about it, actually i heard about prosumers having fungus as well..
i think it has to do with the type of users and the pace of prosumers:- a) Less fussy users (at least in general comparison with d/SLR users). Maybe its there, but no one really notices anyway. Maybe when the time comes, you'd rather buy a new one anyway than getting it cleaned <-- if its possible? b) by the time the fungus is really noticeable, the prosumer could most likely be in the bin anyway, outclassed by a newer model.. haha |

I wouldn't leave sensitive plastic stuff in hot places for long...
The reason being that everytime plastic expands and then later contracts (hot day, later cold night), it may not return to its original shape. Maybe just a few microns off but could possibly affect the lens elements' alignment. |

For me, it's the BBB virus at work:
My Olympus gear: E-330 + kit 14-45mm lens + lots of freebies -> S$2000 (when just launched early 2006) ZD 35mm macro f/3.5 -> S$340 Z OM 50mm f/1.8 -> S$67 ZD 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 -> S$765 ZD 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 -> S$220 (sold off at S$60 depreciation, after 1 year) ZD 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 -> S$1610 Vivitar Series 1 manual focus 70-210mm f/2.8-4 ->S$136 FL-50 flash -> S$550 Sunpak 383 Super flash -> S$150 Spyder 2 Express -> S$150 No-name brand lousy slave flash -> S$60 Lowepro Slingshot 200AW bag -> S$85 Misc stuff like extra mem card and filters, caps, hoods, spare battery-> S$200 Total: S$6203 I've often wondered why couldn't I have just bought a S$600-1000 prosumer and be just as happy with it..? Furthermore, cameras are tested to be kept at up to 65C which is not reachable inside the car boot. Coupled with being kept inside a Lowepro bag, I'm convinced there will be no problem. One more thing, I don't think smoke from the exhaust should leak into the car boot. If it does, you'd better get your car checked. |

Furthermore, the storage and operation temperature of any equipment is different. Storage temperature usually can be at least 20C higher than operation temperature. Therefore, no worries of putting any equipment like laptops or cameras in the boot.I put my gears in the car boot because I park inside the vicinity of my company. No worries of them being jacked. There is no problem with my gears after doing this for countless of times and they are already about 4 years old and working great! |
