Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus Camera, Reimagined ?

When it comes to flagship smartphone cameras, Samsung is well-known for pulling out the all stops in order to beat the competition, leveraging both high-quality, innovative hardware and cutting-edge software techniques.

It should come as no big surprise, then, that the company’s latest Galaxy S9 Plus has shot to the top of DxOMarks ubiquitous, if somewhat controversial, camera quality chart.

The Galaxy S9 Plus’ dual main camera features a 12MP 1/2.55” sensor with a variable f/1.5 / f/2.4 aperture, paired with a 12MP telephoto module with a 1/3.6” sensor and a fixed f/2.4 aperture.

With an overall score of 99, the Galaxy S9 Plus has edged former champ, Google’s Pixel 2 XL, into second place by a single point. However, when compared to the Pixel 2, the S9 Plus isn’t simply ‘better by one’.

That overall DxOMark score, useful as it is, is a rather blunt instrument for determining the best camera for your needs. The headline score is calculated from separate photo and video tests, each of which is broken down further into subtests aimed at specific types of performance.

It’s possible, therefore, for a high final result to mask significant inconsistencies and weaknesses, as a superb result in one subtest can make up for less-than-stellar performance in another.



The Galaxy S9 Plus scores 104 points in the Photo category, beating the iPhone X by 3 points and the Pixel 2 by five points - a more significant margin than is revealed by the overall DxOMark rating. This is the best Photo score recorded to date, and the DxOMark team noted that no significant weak areas were revealed during testing.

The new camera delivers significantly higher scores than the Galaxy Note 8, in terms of exposure and contrast, suggesting that the new dual-aperture lens may be indeed be improving base-level performance.

A large proportion of the camera’s 104 points come from the Zoom and Bokeh results. The Galaxy S9 Plus scores a superb 65 points in the zoom test, one point shy of the Galaxy Note 8, and a very good score of 50 points in the Bokeh test. The latter result means that DxOMark rates the camera as about half as good as a DSLR when rendering a sharp subject with blurred background and foreground details in portrait mode.

If you take a lot of telephoto or portrait mode shots, then the Galaxy S9 Plus has just about the best camera you can buy right now. The iPhone X is still rated higher for its bokeh effect, but Samsung is significantly ahead when it comes to detailed zoom shots.

However, if we restrict the test results to straightforward shots, taken with the main lens, the Pixel 2 still comes out far ahead of both the Galaxy S9 Plus and the iPhone X in terms of crucial metrics such as Exposure & Contrast, Color, Autofocus and Texture. This is despite the Pixel 2 having just a single lens with a relatively narrow f/2.0 aperture.

With a Video score of 91 points, the Galaxy S9 Plus delivers some of the best video quality available, matching the Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro end edging ahead of the iPhone X at 89 points. It does, however, lag some way behind the Pixel 2 which manages to achieve 96 points.

The S9 Plus was praised in particular for its colour rendition, receiving the best score to-date in this subtest.

While DxOMark’s tests thoroughly evaluate the fundamental performance characteristics of each camera, there are lots of capabilities which don’t get tested at all. This is especially true when testing video.

DxOMark tests all cameras at default settings, ignoring functions such as panorama mode, slow-motion and 4K video. If these functions are of primary importance to you, you will need to look further than these results when making your purchasing decision.

The video options, in particular, are ahead of the Pixel 2 thanks to being able to capture at four times the frame rate, allowing for super-slow-motion video at the same level as the current iPhone range.

I have a feeling that Samsung will give free screen warranty in the upcoming launching road show. Let's wait and see.

No la . just giving some advice to people based on my own experience. Iinm, Samsung have been giving the free screen and smart warranty during the s8 and Note 8 road shows. So I expected that this round they will give the free warranty as well.
