I registered an acc here just to warn all online buyers/ sellers on Carousell abt scammers on the platform
Be aware of +60 10-858 2025 and +60 11-2616 3314 these two phone num
Also this address:
b3-23 jalan damai perdana 2 bandar damai perdana 55000 kuala lumpur w. persekutuan(kl)

This is what happened:
I'm new to Carousell and I posted an item for sale on Carousell last night. Within minutes there r two interested buyers messaging me abt the same time asking for WhatsApp pm
So I WhatsApp them
Both of them said they're on business trips and the conversation was so similar that it seemed fishy, it's as if I'm talking to the same person
They even explained they want the item to be delivered to their relatives in Selangor/ KL area bcos they're out of town. They've been giving me too much details which got me really suspicious. Under normal condition no body cares to explain so much to a stranger online, at least not me :-/
One of them asked me to show him/her photos of the item but clearly not interested. He/she replied 'ok' even before I finished sending all the pics
I got really suspicious when they asked me for my bank details (even its the normal procedure but the buyer just seemed too eager) so I went back to carousell to check their user acc
Now both the "interested buyers" r listed as SUSPENDED USERS. They weren't when they first approached me and thank god I checked.
I started googling abt scams on carousell and surprisingly there r lots of similar cases, just that in most cases the phone num will be foreign ones
Those scammers r from Nigeria (from what I read) pretending to be Malaysians. If anyone interested in knowing the details can just google abt it
So I again google the phone num and even asked for the address they want me to send the item to
NOTHING came out
The way they write the address was also another thing that made me feel off
This whole thing just doesn't feel right so I started chatting with the scammers in bahasa
And this's when I'm sure the "interested buyer" is actually a scammer
He/she refused to chat in bahasa bcos he/she is a Chinese (what a bs excuse) and asked me to chat in English
I simply replied him I'm not a Chinese(while in fact I'm Chinese)
No Malaysian will stop dealing with a seller just bcos they start to converse with u in bahasa (at least not me)
I've been buying things online for so long please la 🙄
Every time if a seller starts to chat in bahasa I'll just switch to bahasa to reply
Even if ur bahasa is so teruk u can also understand what's being said and reply in English
I think the buyer blocked me after I asked him if he's busy scamming ppl online cos I can't see his profile pic any more
Both the acc were registered on the same day and the WhatsApp acc were also registered on relatively close date and recently (if I rmb correctly one is on 1 Dec 2017 the other is later, couldn't view it after being blocked)
Their WhatsApp is always "online" status I guess bcos they're busy finding new victims

Now I'm thinking if I should chat with the other acc that hasn't blocked me yet cos it's kinda fun when u know they're trying to fool u

tldr...
read few lines already know those are very common scammer tactics....not only in carousel..also in mudah and any online selling platform.
u continue chat also u gain nothing except wasting time.
no way to eradicate them...so best to be smart and have common sense.

1. Nigerian scam. Very very common. Welcome to the net.

2. If you have time, you can troll them. If not, just ignore them.

3. I once trolled a scammer. Keep him occupied for few nights.
If he's occupied, he has less resource to scam other people. This was what I think.

Once they asked to whatsapp instead of deal in carousell, it's already fishy.

Dunno why you proceed to whatsapp them.

fyi, i am a fellow carouseller myself. almost 95% of things i advertise on carousell, i sell via whatsapp. not only its fast but its safe. for your case, if the buyer refuse to deal on your terms, just block them.

I sold my Apple Nike Watch for RM900 to a Middle Eastern, fortunately I did a COD with him to which I demanded to see if the cash is present after I showed him the watch, the charger is working fine, before I allow him to pair.

They need your email to send a fake email from their bank saying that money has been transferred to your account. Sometimes they say they have transferred more and ask you to transfer back the extra. These are simple scams to catch those who don't bother to check their accounts whether the money is really in or not.

Is this still a problem now that there's Carousell Protection? Are there any known scams within the Protection system that we should know about?

Should be OK. You will probably get an email from their "bank" saying they have received his money but you need to pay something to get it...bla...bla. Just ignore it.

Once buyer asks for your email it is most likely a scam. Banks don't need your email to transfer money.
