Played with portrait mode to see if it works and found some interesting results ...
1) Detailed specs of the camera lenses from
this review on gsmarena:
Rear Camera: 12MP (1.4µm), f/1.9, Samsung S5K2L7, dual pixel PDAF primary, 5MP (1.25µm), f/2.0, Samsung S5K5E8 depth sensor; 1080p video
Front Camera: 13MP (1.12µm), f/2.0, OV13855, LED flash; 1080p video
2) Camera Frame (ie aspect ratio) within camera settings... 3 aspect ratios:
4:3 ... imho this gives the maximum usage of the sensor
16:9 ... widescreen & 18:9 ... ultra wide screed .... imho these are achieved by masking the sensor - ultra widescreen uses the least pixels on the sensor
3) Rear Cam portrait mode
Background blurring is good. No complaints. BUT ...
Regardless what frame you choose in settings, the photos I got from portrait mode are only 2752px x 2064px ie 5,680,128 pixels in total & the aspect ratio is 4:3
4) Front cam portrait mode ie for selfies
Unlike when using Rear Cam, the portrait mode is hidden within the flash icon... click flash icon in upper left corner & then click the person icon to activate portrait mode
Background blurring is also good. No complaints AND...
The photos I got came in various sizes depending on the frame that I chose in camera settings:
4:3 frame = 4160px x 3120px = 12,979,200px
16:9 frame = 4160px x 2340px = 9,734,400px
18:9 frame = 4160px x 2080px = 8,652,800px
5) Conclusion?
a) Looks like Xiaomi set up the phone to cater for narcissists - you get the biggest files and therefore the biggest prints when shooting front cam portrait mode LOL
b) IMHO there was no need for a secondary depth sensor lens at the back. Comparing portraits from the front cam and from the back cam, i can't see much diff in blurring effect.
c) Why do I only get 5.68Mpx 4:3 photos? Did I screw up in any settings when taking portraits with the rear cam? Is there something wrong with my unit? Looks like the bigger 12MP (1.4µm), f/1.9 lens is only being used as a depth sensor
