Thanks @coolguy99, very cool! Are you working now and if yes how much did you asked for your salary and any tips on getting offers? (no luck so far)
*
I asked for 3.2k for my first job and gotten the job. I would say it’s a pretty decent pay.

Considering that you do not have any bargaining power (apart from your cgpa), I would say don’t set your expectations too high, focus on gaining experience and money will come eventually if you are proven to be good at what you do.

*

What's an acceptable increment for someone earning ~4k, mid 20s, 2 yr experience, within the financial industry?

I got 8% but not sure what to make of this. Previously company didn't get increment as I jumped ship just before.
*
8% is pretty standard in the industry nowadays. If you work in banks you get only 4-6% but the bonus will be better than yours (in general).

Hi guys, I am a fresh graduate in accounting and finance. Today I just got an offer for Accounting Assistant position but the starting salary is RM2.4k only. Isn't the standard market range is 2.5-3k? Btw, it is a medium sized logistics company.
*
If you have good cgpa I think you can get at least 2.8k at bigger mnc or banks, maybe try those out? Anyway I wouldn't complain as this is your first job.

some of my friends and families, they get more and more commitments while working at SG,
I.E. buy nice fancy cars, luxurious condo and etc.

In the end they are trapped at SG forever, separated from their family. Because coming back to work in Malaysia just cannot support all those commitments with the way lower salary here.

So need to be careful on that.

But if you are planning to work till retirement, consider all I said as bullsh1t  tongue.gif
*
Haha yes many of my friends faced the same situation too. Just simply couldn't return due to high commitment.

i am at sg at the moment. i really hated the job/environment in singapore. the only factor that is pulling me back to stay on in this singky island is the sgd.. i calculated myself, the amount i am saving per month whilst working in singapore, is waay waay more than in malaysia.

soemtimes i relly hope, rm is stronger, like 1:2 ?? then, at least i have more solid reason to move back
*
I don't think it will ever happen lol. I can forsee myself moving to SG eventually too, even though I am making a decent living here.

QUOTE(budang @ Apr 29 2019, 09:04 AM)
I think you're doing pretty fine. Assuming you started working at 22 years old, 4 years working experience in IT field and pulling in 6k a month is not too bad, probably ahead of 50-60% of similarly experienced IT professionals out there. That said, your salary is above the median salary for people your age.

But life is a marathon rather than a sprint. Don't rush things too aggressively, on some occasion you can slow down your pace and enjoy the things you have achieved. About buying a house and settling down in Klang Valley, like a forumer have mentioned above, buy something within your means first. Let's say you're planning to set back RM2K a month to buy a house in Klang Valley, looking for a condominium at 400k will be a realistic figure. And 400k should be able to get you a 3 bedroom condo in the outskirts of KL.

Financial management is more crucial than having a big salary. So live within your means and you will find yourself pulling through whatever situation. I'm also an IT professional reaching 27 this year, reaching 10k  salary but difference is I'm married and have larger commitment, but I live within my means and never indulge myself in superficial luxuries.
*
Yes I agree with what you said above. I think that financial management is definitely more crucial than the money you earn. Let’s say if you happen to earn a lot but with a lavish lifestyle, you do not have any savings at the end of the day, it’s actually worst.

Do you guys find yourself having to jump every 2-4 years in order to get a higher salary?
*
Myself yes. I try to jump every 2 years. but for my most recent job I am stuck cause I think I am paid higher than average hence I find it difficult to find my next destination.

I am in IT btw.

What is the usual reason when hiring manager ask about why are you leaving the previous company ?

Normally I will say looking the career prospect is better. So far nobody have asked me will you do that if you joined our company. If they do I will say yes too.

hi all.. just wanted to ask.. if you are jumping from a permanent employment into a 12 month contract job, what sort of pay hike should you be expecting ?

I will never do that in the first place, unless you don't have a choice (i.e. making a jump from MY to overseas).

Hello. I realized there are many IT seniors here. I worried I choose wrong IT field since I am fresh graduate right now.
Now I'm in internship as a software tester but I found that there are less job opportunities for tester in Malaysia. The salary of tester < developer.  Should I change to Software Engineer or Developer in future? I may stay in current company  as graduate trainee-tester (18 months) after internship. If I accept the offer as GT (salary around 3k), I only can promote after 18 months. Compared to other friends, they might be higher position in other company after I finish my GT life.
*
And you need to be prepared for life as a software tester as the work that you do may be repetitive in nature.

Actually there is future for tester.
But you need to upskill yourself to do “test automation”, not just create test cases and do manual testing etc.
API calls, integration test etc all can be automated, and companies (even Google/Facebook) needs developers to code those test automations

It can be lucrative career IF you learn the right skill sets
*
I tried before doing test automation. But the effort doing it is quite huge and it is usually a one off usage thing, unless you create test automation script for regression testing purpose, which is repetitive in nature.

Else I should say manual testing is still the way to go as of today.

So should I change to Software engineer?  My tester friend told me there's higher challenging and pressure for Software engineer compared to tester. I believed higher pressure and challenging = earn more money.  tongue.gif
*
Software engineer is more challenging but the work hours may be longer. I would say go for it if you have the correct skill set. Else you can go into the ‘niche’ side of IT (i.e. project manager or business analyst). Such jobs are few and far between so you have to be really good at what you do to excel in this profession.

Note: my apologies for not using multi quote. Am typing the reply in a bus and didn’t realise there are two posts.

want to ask for opinion here
should i sacrifice my permanent job for better pay but contract job
current job -

salary: 4k - GLC - (5% increment/y)
status: permanent, almost impossible to get retrench unless commit crime
benefit: family medical coverage, phone allowance, parking allowance, house loan subsidy
bonus: 0 ~ 3 month
workload: relax
career growth: hard, due to strong political practice & group is losing money

offered job -

salary: 6 ~ 6.5k - MNC, O&G based (1 ~ 8% increment/y)
status: contract - project based, but they say always renew, never end contract (maybe sweet talk)
benefit: family medical coverage, phone allowance, parking allowance
bonus: not sure
workload: probably hectic
career growth: not sure
*
Contract based is a dealbreaker for me. I just can’t stand the lack of job security in this part.

I do agree on this. But when we compare permanent vs contract position, permanent position do offer more job security in comparison.
