Note:
I honestly think consulting M&E engineer in building industry is a dying industry, let's look at the building industry as a whole, we got the developer (who want to cut cost), contractor, supplier, and the consultant (Architect, Civil & Structural, Quantity surveyor, etc).
Developer will earn money, they are the initiator of the project, and people need buildings. Developer start to get money as soon as they signed SPA.
Contractor will earn money if they can get job and know where and how to save cost. Contractor can make claim every months, and developer usually don't want to delay their payment.
Supplier will earn money, just the matter of sales and marketing. Most suppliers will get down payment as soon as receiving order.
Consultant is charging a fee, but the payment is based on the stages, it's normal to wait 1 years or more to claim the first 10%, and the fee is getting lower and lower due to the price war started many years ago, so you need to get many projects and run at different stages to ensure the cash flow. Normally we will get a monthly claim when the projects started construction, so really depending on company's luck. Developer may not start construction when the market is bad, but consultant need to pay salary every month.
On the workload, depending if your client is a friendly person or not, it can be quite stressful if your client demand a lot, asking you to do a lot of proposals that you know cannot work, yet they don't want to listen to your advice. Some screw ups by contractors or suppliers also blame to the consultant. Plus the responsibility as an engineer, where we need to be responsible if the failure of the system caused damages to property or life.
Made me wondering, why should I study an engineering degree, working in some high stress projects, have a higher risk when going to site, yet getting a pay lower than bank industry?
You need to be really passionate about building design to join this line of work...
So sorry to hear that. Change to contractor? or do in-house design for Main-Con? I think they pay better.
