haha very hard to say la hhaha..Some people start lower than others, but in the long run become richer..

The higher they pay you, the higher expectation they are expecting from you. Normally, they would expect a return revenue amount by 3 times of the paid salary. Good luck yo. rclxms.gif

It depends whether u good or not... actually in any field..if you are good you can demand higher pay, and people willing to pay you highly..
When people say engineers pay very low..i say bullshit.. top engineering graduates easily get RM5k and above, if they know where to find and ace all interviews... Thats why they are top in the first place..

Thats why no matter what u do, be the top 10%-20%

What platform and framework you use? How good is your skill for those you have used? Any project portfolio you have done?

QUOTE(hyperbelt7 @ Mar 18 2019, 01:38 PM)
Working on both unix and windows in c + cpp, interfaced to tcl. We use boost library, and not much other stuff.

i'm pretty good, above average for my skill (I compare myself to others my age/experience). But technically I still don't know a lot of stuff, espc data structure. The software I worked on require more electronic knowledge which I possess, rather than competing with ppl from Comp Science who have way more knowledge in programming I presume (I'm from Computer Engineering).
*
Hmm... Your working platform is somehow different from what I have been doing, brows.gif

Working experience wise, such as expose to real world data structure is required, since you have knowledge like handling electronic in Unix and cpp, I suggest you can continue that way (Not much people with that skill on market I suppose, as compare to Programmer). A Unix Specialist or Engineer could earn you a lot. Salary more or less 5.2k+- with 2 years experience.

Yeah I know. I only realize how much knowledge I'm lacking in real world data structure is when I go for TripleByte online interview, where they ask a lot of data structure stuff. Heck they don't even teach you data structure in uni for Computer Engineering (I know comp sci did).

Currently I'm moving forward as Software engineer rather than programmer precisely because of this. But I'm taking up course on data structure since that will help me with my path down Software Engineer too.

Software Engineer requires programming too...

Nah, software engineer, not system engineer. I'm not sure how they really classify the difference between programmer and software engineer. But from what I can notice in jobstreet, anything programming that requires the knowledge of engineering (semicon), then they will classify the job as software engineer.

QUOTE(icebryanchan @ Mar 19 2019, 10:23 AM)
my personal opinion,

Software-Hardware ratio 90:10, programmer.
Software-Hardware ratio 50:50, software engineer.

Also,
Programmer focuses more on end user experience (optimized application, optimized logics)
Software engineer focuses more on how the codes are designed (optimized code flow, optimized architecture design, component design, system design.)

Note that I mean they are doing almost the same thing, but their focus field is different by a little.
*
My title were Software developer and got promoted to Software Engineer. I could say, they are 2 same thing. I do no difference.

My job scope included all you mentioned by icebryanchan sweat.gif

Additionally, include QA, server, meet customer, machines, etc. Although I'm not in SME line, but MNC sweat.gif

Never stay in a company too long while you're still at the stage of "Golden Age". Unless you don't want to improve or settle down in that company.

I'm already being pressured by my family to get a more profitable job/career considering my parents age but I felt like my experience is not justifiable to do so in such a short term. There were a few opportunities I spotted while browsing but I don't know anymore. Should I stay for a while or prepare to advance and move on to greener pasture?

If I'm not always so uncertain of my decisions, perhaps sad.gif
My father wanted to retire in another 5 years or so and move someplace else to enjoy the remainder of his life (same for my mother as well), I got 2 siblings one of which is still studying for diploma (or degree idk), the other while graduated from automotive college, currently works with my father and isn't really capable of continuing the business (he's physically weak to do so either way).

So I'm planning to progress my career and improve my finance to be able to bear the future commitments and afford my own lifestyle, or live on my own if it ever comes to that , that is.

The only thing to get you higher is to cover your face with your thick butt.

They offers better prospect comparing to your current, why not?

If not now then when brows.gif

Maybe you can try to interview and get some idea on how is the market of your position now. Most of the time, the paycheck in new job are more attractive than current company promotion and you may explore to new things and strengthen your skill sets. There's chances 'promise' turned into disappointment unless it stated in black and white.  nod.gif

There are chances that even b/w document will become invalid. I had this experience before. HR say they have privilege to do this way as they see fit.
