Off topic, but after seeing posts from this forum I'd like to have some input.

I'm 22, currently a medical student and am thinking of dropping the course. I still have 3 years left and to keep it short, I feel like the lifestyle isn't for me.

Would definitely like some input on some career options where I could start working without a degree. Currently looking for a career where I can progress along the way and have a clear career path.

I appreciate your help. Thanks!

If you are dropping medi because foresee lifestyle doesn't suit, I would start by thinking what kind of life or lifestyle you would want to have?

Today you have plenty of things to do or survive without any degree... Eg: social media influencer, YouTuber, marketing, sales, entrepreneur, full time trader, and the list goes on.... Again the millions bucks question is what you like?

probably by 32 you will hit, no worries.

now, move on to your next target 15k by 35 and 20k by 40!

I also missed my first milestone by some 2 years, but manage to hit 2nd milestone, thereabouts.

Try not to limit yourself to a mindset of RM20k by 40. I had that once and it limited a lot of what I did and mindset. It is very possible to hit more than 20k even when you are 35.

As one who managed to achieve it by being in one company, it all depends on your own initiative. No one will help you chart your path or tell you what to do. You need to know what you want to do, then work it out with your company how you want to achieve it. If you want to aim for a higher salary by being promoted, then its not about being good at your current job. You need to prove that you can already perform at the next level. Document all of your achievements, all of your discussions and target with your line manager/supervisor. Make sure that you yourself chart out a career path you want to achieve and then find validation whether that is achievable internally whether again it is with your supervisor/line manager/HR. If all things seem unlikely, then start building up your personal portfolio of achievements and find out what roles you want to apply for outside. Don't use whatever you have now at your current workplace in terms of achievement because all that shows is that you are just performing at your current level. If the role you want out there is a management role, then start finding as many opportunities to show that your initiative and effort in trying to build your skills in that area. For example, if you dont have a chance to say lead a team at your current role, find out initiatives within your company where you can be the lead (e.g. such as leading a team building event or leading a new initiative).

If you just think of a 5% annual increment, you will wait forever before you reach a RM10k salary.

It would depend on how you sell yourself on both your resume and during the interview.
What is the definition of management? Is it managing people? Is it managing a project? Is it managing a product? Is it managing a campaign?
It all also depends on which company you are looking at and what field you are in.
I don't think there is a single answer which is able to answer your question without diving deeper.

I'm looking to explore ESG related field, first by getting a postgraduate degree on the matter. Studied Chemical and Environmental and has gotten involved in current company's initiatives towards ESG, so hoping that would get me in. Looking to change industries as well in future, as in construction there's limited value towards ESG, plus how group services type employees are being valued.

Are ESG related positions very industry-centric in terms of employment? or is it pretty open to potential employees from different fields?

Really need to look at how to jump my salary with 2 small kids around and wife just started teaching in gomen school. Current company is not all that bad in terms of working environment, but the increment and remuneration package is fairly behind par. Just a matter of risking comfort zone against getting higher pay.

Hello.

SGD 9K was just the base. I still get 20% bonus on top of that. More importantly, I was desperate to join in-house so I hopped at the opportunity. I was lucky to get 9K without any in-house experience smile.gif
Agency - my base was only RM10K (everything else on top was pure commission and it's BRUTAL. A LOT of hustle is required for those sales calls/month end push). Age was catching up and I just don't see myself doing it anymore.

Career advancement is also generally better in-house vs an agency.

Try not to limit yourself to a mindset of RM20k by 40. I had that once and it limited a lot of what I did and mindset. It is very possible to hit more than 20k even when you are 35.

You're absolutely right - be always thirsty and constantly driven. When you're asked to jump, ask how high? When you think you're comfortable, think again.

[Departing from law practice. The path to a firm's partnership is not meant for everyone. The crux is that even if you have obtained that designation as a Partner, you are still an employee as you are not an 'equity' Partner, and which is another league. Further, there will still be other Partners who are more 'senior' than you. Behold that all wonderful remunerations and bonuses comes with immense performance of KPIs to fulfill which goes without saying. My pursuit, ultimately, is to set up my own practice - to stand on my own feet. For now, I'm taking on an in-house role with supposedly more work-life balance and with this breather time, I'll start to make plans.]

When you tell this to people, we will ask what kind of lifestyle you are looking tbh. Is it a life where you can work from home or a lifestyle of being a youtuber/online sales?
I do agree that some might finished their degree and still felt that this is not the life they want. Some times what you see can be really attractive for you.

But most importantly, what you plan to do in mind and ask yourself these few questions:
1. Are you able to make an income stream out of it? Is this income stream stable and sustainable for the coming years?
2. Will there be any costs that you need to fork out to get this "Dream job"? If yes, do you have enough capital?
3. It wont be easy but are you confident on making a success or not?

Make sure you dont regret dropping out from the cost or else you will be like suddenly missing in the middle of desert.
