hey there! same thing for me, they initially told me they will get back to me by mid september and now they are telling me early october sad.gif what did you get for your a-levels?

Added on September 26, 2012, 2:45 pmHi all, i applied to the aug 12 intake for MBBS PMS but was placed in the waiting list and was eventually put into the application list of feb 13. Therefore technically i am currently applying for the coming feb 2013 intake. I am currently using a result of AABa for my application, which i fear might not be enough to earn me a place in the MBBS PMS programme because everyone i know going into the PMS programme has multiple A*s :'( My question is, are there more MBBS local students than MBBS pms students? How many more? and do you think i'll still stand a chance of entering the MBBS PMS programme?

the pms undergraduate stream has now about 100 places....but they take in 120 or so, knowing about 20+% normally flunk out or repeat semester(s).....there are about 30-40 places for the pms graduate stream.....but not popular....

the imu local stream has license for 150 per batch i think, or a total of 300 a year.....

the pms undergraduate stream is the most popular and heavily subscribed, thus raising the minimum cut off.....with so many students with a* grades nowadays, aab may NOT make it anymore......

as an indication, while just 4 years ago, atar 91 will get in, but this year, the cut off was 95......(atar 95 is about a levels a*a*a equivalent)......
*
ah i see, thanks for the information! i think i have to look for other options now sad.gif

Where would I complete my internship if I apply to medicine as an international student (Australia) - Malaysia or Australia?

Can I choose to practice in Malaysia instead of going back to Australia (and complete my internship in Malaysia)?
*
I reckon it will be more likely that you will be given an internship position in Australia. I Remember they rank medical graduates as follow:

1. Aussie citizen/PR, Aussie med school graduate
2. Aussie citizen/PR, International medical graduate (IMG)
3. Non citizen/PR, Aussie med school graduate
4. Non citizen/PR, IMG

Can you provide a link to your information?

It would be great if this is the case, but as an IMG, I will still have to jump through various "hoops" to register as a GP and practice in Australia.
*
I can't remember, it was probably from one of the university's website.

But here, i found something else

http://www.australiandoctor.com.au/news/la...rnship-priority

"Under changes to Victoria’s internship program effective immediately, international students who studied in the state will be given priority over Australian residents who studied interstate."

"First priority will still go to Australian residents who studied in Victoria."

If you extract these clues from the passage, you can see prior to the change, medical grads are ranked like this in most of the states:
1. citizen/pr, aus state grad
2. citizen/pr, aus interstate grad
3. non citizen/pr, aus state grad

Now forgive me for forgetting about interstate medical school factors as well in my previous reply. And also i do not know if a non citizen/pr graduating from an interstate australian medical school would have priority over an australian citizen/pr IMG. But at least we know non citizen/pr + non australian medical school graduates will be given the lowest priority.

Oh, alright. Hmm, so I'm assuming you don't personally know of anyone who got in (IMU-PMS) with grades similar to mine?
*
Those who i know personally in the IMU-PMS program have grades higher than aaa, and many of them with much higher grades, eg. multiple a*s. I personally applied in may april 2012 for the august 2012 intake with my forecasted grade of aaa, and failed to make it to the shortlist, and was delayed by one intake, so i'll only be going in next february, and i really consider myself lucky!

Lol stop acting like you know hell a lot about the examination.... The truth is a level students did well better than Sam students and the percentile of Sam is adjusted, so many students got 90+ and above and how about those that are 0.1 percentile?  If you are good, then you are, not about the board of examination
QUOTE(limeuu @ Nov 3 2012, 07:29 AM)
this show you obviously do not understand what a percentile ranking system means...

what i have quoted are all information in the public domain....

'many students get 90+'.....i presume that is atar rank....yes many....exactly 10%.....

'0.1 percentile'.....i take that to mean the top percentile, or atar rank of 99.9....well, that means that exactly.....the top 0.1 of all students get that result....

'if you are good , then you are'.....how do the unis know how good you are?.....

18% of students sitting for the uk a levels get aaa or better....how good is a student with aaa then?.....all we can say is, he is at least better than 82% of all a level students...
Whether or not an ATAR of 82 is equivalent to an AAA at A-level is never up to us to decide. Statistically, there is nothing wrong in saying that they are equivalent, but universities have a different way of doing things, they take many things into account. Take ANU for example, they raised the requirement for GCE A-Levels tremendously this year.

For example, the requirement for GCE A-Level students to do Bachelors of Medical Science is :A*A*A (17) or AAAB (19) for 2013, while requirement for OSSD is 80%, BBC for Hong Kong A-level and ATAR90 for Australian year 12. But for 2012, the requirement for GCE A-Levels was a mere BBB (12), while others are the same.

So can you say that for the year 2012, BBB is equivalent to ATAR 90 because only 10% of the students get better grades than BBB, but in 2013 it is A*A*A? There is no clear cut here, it depends solely on universities. Some universities want to cut down the number of GCE A-Level students, hence they raise the bar for them, some think that Australian year 12 is slightly easier than GCE A-Levels and hence they think an ATAR of 95 is equivalent to AAB at A-levels (IMU).

So chill and peace out guys. thumbup.gif

I seriously have no idea what happened to this thread. But whatever pre-u program u studied is not going to affect your future results. Maybe during the early semesters certain pre-u program would help as they did touch on the subjects before... but after semester 2 it's a complete different story.

I've seen so many of my friends withdrawing, I've seen the smartest student withdrawing seriously. If you really want to study medicine, think it over again. Your best friend would seriously be your lecture notes and textbooks. It's a great course to be in but we basically have very little personal time. 2 hours of lecture a day is great! But not when you have to study from morning until night in order to pass an exam.

alright i know i'm coming out of nowhere. sorry X_x

hi senior, i'll be going in next feb, and am thrilled smile.gif any advice on how to survive medical school? for example, what was your method of studying? do the lecture notes and textbooks cover almost everything that you need to know for your exams? do lectures suffice? did you have to do extra reading outside? what is your average week like? or any other advices for me? smile.gif

If the cut off is atar 95,does it mean I have no chance?
I had 88 aggregate in mufy,which equivalents to atar 93 I guess?
I am really nervous now as I really want to get into IMU.
*
If i am not mistaken, you will need to hit the cut-off score to have your application submitted, and sit for an interview. I was told that it is the "minimum requirement to apply". All the best!! smile.gif

Hi,the mimimumrequirement in their website is really low, like bbc.
But the real cut off is much higher than that.
I think they still give out interview offers to those who meet bbc but under real cut off
*
I was told that the cut off for the mbbs local program is indeed bbc/bbb, so you can apply with bbc/bbb; while the cut off for the pms stream is aab/aaa.

Limited job position, too many medical graduates.many unis have medicine faculty.
You will be fine if you graduate from reputable uni and have at least master degree and some connections.
My relative had a mbbs degree and when he is undertaking master degree he find a medical related part time job RM 100 a day.
Not too bad given the salary condition in my opinion.

Hi,
I am an applicant from singapore interested in attending imu pms programme. I have some queries with regard to their admission process. Firstly, is there an exact cut off for the pms with singapore a level results? Will they look into your co curriculars together with your grades to decide on an offer for you? Secondly, how is the interview like? Is it more for formality, or they really want to sieve out people. Thirdly, are there many Singaporeans studying there? Lastly, I've read about the unpredictable matching system in imu. If I were to put all the choices as UK would I have a chance of getting a school not on my list of choices? I'm predicted AABB for my a levels. Can you apply with predicted grades? Thank you for the help, really appreciate it smile.gif
*
1. Cut off
There will be an exact cut off for the UK GCE, but I do not know if they have one for the Singapore Alvls. It is normally aab-aaa.

2. CoCo
I don't believe anyone can answer this unless he/she works in the admission department. But from what I feel, yes they do, because interviewers did ask me a lot about my extra coco activities.

3. Interview
I'd say it's both. It will be more towards the formality side for the local mbbs program, and more towards the sieving out candidates side for the pms programme. However this is only based on my perception. Again only someone from the admission team will know the exact mechanism behind all this.

4. Matching Process
Yes. The matching process is quite opaque. You rank the universities, and the universities rank you. Your ranking carries 5x more weightage. At the end you will have a score for each of the university. You will either get the highest or lowest score pms (can't remember sorry). If you choose Jefferson you will not be able to choose the other 4 PMSes, and if you fail to get into Jefferson they will but you into any pms with a slot. And of course most importantly you will need to pass all 5 semesters.

5. Forecast results?
Yes, I too applied with my forecast results.
