During my time the spinothalamic tract stuffs came out, those pain and temperature, light touch and something else. And there was a band of loss of sensation in the umbilicus etc. lol i forgot whats that already, and nothing else came out for neuroanatomy.

How was the most recent matching?
*
hmm its like a whole lot of work for neuroanatomy but very little comes out blink.gif just browsing through the books , neuroanatomy looks more complex than a circuit board.

no im not in sem 5 yet. just finished sem 4. so my matching will be conducted towards the end of this year.

well rclxub.gif m208 people all in library camping out. i think im one of the rare few still slacking sad.gif damn sad being in a highly competitive batch.

So, monkeygirl, I guess if your batch has went down to 200 students already, then you can safely say that there won't be anymore eliminations/failures, well not many at least, right?

for eos 5 you just have to worry about making a pass right? i mean the ranking for the matching was based on your eos3 results right? oh and by the way, what do you suggest for people who want to be matched to the university of their choice? i mean, i hear about all these earnest kids who are so determined about going to like adelaide or nsw, and then later it's sad to see their dissappointment as if their dreams were crushed. I hear a lot about how imu students are like must get A or the highest possible just to hope for a chance to get a university within their choices. It's ironic cause i read somewhere that how you fare academically in medicine is not a measure of how good a doctor you are. I mean, I get it, it's a dog eat dog world we live in, but to rank everyone is basically turning students against each other.

oh, and would someone like to explain to the many prospective imu students about the format of eos, like say eos 5?
*
its sadder to hear the pms matching is a lottery in fact.

its a myth, uni adelaide does take resit students. happened for m207!

so would it be correct to say that if your batch has went down to 200 students already, then you can safely say that there won't be anymore eliminations/failures, well not many at least, right?

is it true that you will fail unless you memorise all the lecture notes? How do you get an A? And if someone just wants to pass, how do they do that? Isn't it hard just to pass?

I heard that in Monash they have distinction and all that, but they raise the passing mark according to student performance in formatives, so its not A, B or C, it's just pass or borderline pass etc.

I think someone here mentioned that you just have to make sure you're not in the bottom 20% of your batch, but then who the hell are those people anyway? You can't really know everyone's results, so what are those people at the top doing right? That is, if they're human . . .
*
im just merely stating the fact that the PMS route is a lucky draw/lottery. the chances of getting your first pick is almost like a lottery unless you're the top few students of your batch and even then some of them dont get it!!! get what i mean?

as what limeuu said, grades help but not entirely, they say adelaide dont take resit student yet adelaide take resit student. Adelaide is a top pick for all batches trust me i've survyed. this time around adelaide bound people placed it as their 10-15 th choice or so. (amazing right?)

i've yet to undergo matching, my final sem in imu. its been a bitter sweet joy ride wink.gif

but this is a good shout out to all of you imu-pms bound, planning on coming into to imu expecting to go to a uni you saw on imu site. cause the list changes/evolves all the time and yes you arent gonna get a place in the uni you want.

you gotta memorize, no matter how much understanding you have of the subject, you still gotta memorize the names (pharmaco) etc etc.understanding might just boost you alot in physio and patho (to some extent during the progression of a certain condition) but memorizing is the key in most cases.

i think all preceeding results are given to the pms, and the respective pms will decide what to use for, their ranking of students......

having said that, the results of matching suggest the official matching algorithm is not followed most of the time......so for the majority of people, it's very much a lottery.....
*
totally agree its a lottery. unless you're at the absolute top 5 of your batch, i highly doubt most of us will get our top pick yet alone first 3 picks. its really based on luck!!

IMU is partly owned by khazanah. they have enough govt connections to make it fully recognizable for sure.

I saw in the papers today, as per the Audit Report, that UM was disposing their dental chairs for a song!

Should have entered into a long term agreement with UM to buy their used chairs and save costs.

Thereafter, the savings could be pass on to the students through lower fees.
*
private institute wont save and route it to the benefit of the students. its all about the money here! they are increasing the fees every sem!!

btw m208, matching results out tomorrow!!!!! notworthy.gif hope for the best!

thanks! i actually got my top 5. so pretty happy about it! i'm an average student.

alot of better performing students have gotten their 8th or 7th choice.

we definitely know that imu manipulates some places. better students to balance out some places in their respetive universities. 2/08 for example was liverpool. where else some uni's like leicester for example, got lower scoring students. its also a noted fact that, some universities with maybe one or two students ranking it as first choice, they didnt even get it, instead they distributed it to students who placed it 2nd or 3rd .

safe to say if you're in the top 40 performers of your batch, your first choice pick is quite guaranteed. from there till the average students, you're in a free for all to be placed to balance certain uni's out.

some other uni's got all top students: melbourne, nottingham, edinbrugh, glasgow. australian uni's got a good spectrum of students, esp those of group of 8 standard. from around average level mostly with one or two above average students.

overall the matching yielded better results than previous cohorts from what i've heard, but still controversial with the "spreading"

all the best to m109. i'll be transfering with you guys. so announce or pm me when your results are out! we might be going together.

P.S word of advice to all future PMS students. With matching go with an open mind, chances of getting your places are as follows:

average students , will generally get top 5. above average is free for all kinda scary to be here though alot got 6-8th pick. top level will be top (least chance of getting out of top 3) . if you've failed or repeated a sem, you're push way down for sure, then you better be ready for another free for all choice. International students run the risk of weird placing as well. Positions in SRC (big boost here) . The other ECA stuff, honestly if you're not in it for the love of doing some extra activity dont waste your time, it boils down to results only.

however this is always subject to change. dont believe word for word, as this is an inference me and my cohort , and based on stories (some really scary) from seniors.

one more event from imu remains for me biggrin.gif

is it true, you should rank your unis based on how well you think you'll pefrom within the poppulation, like if you think you're def a top student place your desired uni at 1 or 2, or if you think you're not too good and place it like 3rd 4th kinda thing, like a safety thingy

exactly........

i think what they do is, split the class into 2 broad groups.....so if pmr X has 4 places, they will select 2 from the top half and 2 from the bottom half.....

therefore, the top AND the average (ie tops of the lower half) gets their choices.......the hardest hit are those in the bottom half of the top band (still very good students)......it sucks having to loose all your choices to the average students........
*
might not be that easy honestly. cause i feel there are some JPA only unis. Galway, tasmania, western sydney. all JPA.

For me is that the actual matching process does take place, but based on imu's ranking of the cohort of students. once the matching has been done, they analyze the batch and make changes. in essence , those above average students have a curse or a blessing. those with good luck will go to good universities which generally take in pretty average to good students. but for the unfortunate ones they'll be allocated to universities with poor to average students which they balance out. I honestly feel this matching was pretty good with the exception of leicester and dalhousie and maybe one more uni, consisting mostly of resit and repeat students.

changing streams used to be an issue both ways.......as spaces are limited also in the seremban stream......

the places have now increased from 50 to 100 per batch (ie 200/year) so it is easy to switch from pms to local.....however, the other direction will remain verboten as the pms places are very restricted, and may shrink, as uwa goes postgraduate, and nz quit from the partnership......

Added on October 31, 2010, 8:54 pm

since when has notts and glasgow become premier med schools allowing them to choose the top students only?.......melbourne and edinburgh i can understand.....
*
well you will be surprised that Glasgow will be receiving students in the top 50 of the batch, and Nottingham in the TOP 30. I think glasgow is highly sought after, its ranked 2nd behind Edinburgh for the high achievers. Nottingham cause of the timing, they go off in Jan! and finish in 5 years.

As for the seremban case. bout 80-90 of my batch will be headed there. much more than previous batches!

For C-Note. it could easily cost around 650-750K RM for phase 1 and 2 (UQ) .

dont neglect your Com Medd. Seriously Free marks. espc those with calculations. some definitions from BS will come out as well.

as for Anatomy, dont kill yourself. they'll ask you to label very simple and easy locations smile.gif
Parasitology is another must have.
Biochem was real simple, probs one or two OBA's only.

SAQ is pretty torturous. so becareful there, as it covers a wide scope.

a very popular question was the description of the biliary tree, so do know that!

I cant help much from here on out, cause i've got bigger fish to fry rclxub.gif EOS5 in 3 weeks!

haven't seen this thread for a long long time.

for those who have been matched to UK, sorry to say but you probably have to take your ielts again. apparently under some new guideline, new students applying for visa have to do so with a valid ielts score. since the ielts score is only valid for 2 years........
i think the new guidelines will affect those applying for visa next yr onwards. i managed to get my visa done even with an expired ielts score.
biggrin.gif
*
how did you manage to get away with that! lucky you!! i really dont wanna take it again though!

btw, seems like this years eos5 was up to par with m208 again, i think almost 0 failures again.

i havent visited the thread in a while..

finally can say my journey here is finally over. will check from time to time, to give advice to anyone new to the medical program at imu.

sorry so say i'm a bit blur with the other faculties but i'll try my best to help out!

i've read the topic at hand. and honestly, from first hand experience. its very much due to luck and chance. so long as you're in the top 10% of the batch (1-20) you're almost guaranteed your top spot unless the uni gives out limited space and the top 5 in your batch are applying to it.

if not, this is my advice. if you're an average scorer like me. meaning your cgpa is breaching 3.0 or so. make sure you have variety in your top 5 selections. dont be so adamant on getting the best unis on your list, or focusing too much in one direction (eg UK) , make sure you mix and match it up alot. so lets say you wanna go to uk try:

1. UK (the uni you want the most)
2. UK
3. AUST
4.AUST
5.UK

something like that. at least if you land on your 3rd or 4th, you'll be getting an australian uni you either dont mind, or like but due to time constraints (speaking strictly to M1's here) you dont wanna wait and would rather start early

And for any repeat/resit students. you'll very likely be thrown to the uni no one wants to go at all (Leceister for my batch) cause you have to resit their EOS5 again, if you fail you go home. hence nobody in their right mind wanted to go. and m208 will be sending almost all the repeats there. So , if you're a resit/repeat, try BMED science, or USMLE. Especially if there arent many students competing for USMLE in your batch, just take it. Its worth while the knowledge to give it a go. This way you'll at least be going to a uni you would wanna go to! or better yet , just dont fail any EOS's tongue.gif

competition slots for Aberdeen and Dundee is now the highest. due to the fact you graduate a whole lot earlier and you spend less money in the long run. this year m2 will be sending 13 students to dundee (hence my logic in saying that DONT BELIEVE THAT ITS ENTIRELY DOWN TO MARKS ALONE)

finally, wishing you all the best future PMS students. it was an interesting time of your IMU life with alot of uncertainty in uni selection. just keep an open mind and you'll find almost any pms option a good option (actually not really smile.gif )

well, it depends on the student tbh. if he/she doesnt wanna stay back in that particular country but would rather want prestige that comes with the university i feel the technique i've mentioned would help spread the distribution a little.

i'll be undertaking 3 years in the uk. but looking at the current situation, my chances are looking slim as they have enough doctors over there dont they?

hmm, yah i know what u mean but eventually one will realise it's not the undergraduate degree that matters anymore =(. It's like, nobody wanna go to Canada / Thomas Jefferson (except for some really enthu ppl) - coz they think those university are just average and they dont bother doing another USMLE - but it actually saves HEAPS of time to get ur specialist accreditation as compared to else where.

3 years UK training is definitely better compared to 2 years! =D
*
i guess depends on the city and all as well for quality of life (everyone tried to avoid canada- but the place looks beautiful in my opinion, and everyone has the its very kampung mentality of dalhousie)

well my batch had alot of enthusiastic people, i think 5 of them competing for 3 slots to thomas jefferson. quite crazy.

where are you currently based at right now? uk i assume?

*
nope, my future Uni admin staff. they were warning me against staying back, said you gotta keep your options open in the future. but maybe they're just fully aware of the situation that if i'm not up to a certain standard i wont get pass FY1 and 2. but its still 3 years time. but then again. its been nearly 3 years since i posted up in this thread! time does fly!
