Singapore Medical Council does not recognize IMU local degree. But theres a series of conversion tests that one can take in order to be granted a license for practising in Singapore.

recognition of professional qualifications will vary from country to country, and also depend on whether that profession is 'registrable' in the country....

as far as i know, eg, nutrition/dietetics is NOT a registrable profession in msia, and i suspect not in spore as well.....so as long as someone wants to employ you, you can work.....

that contrasts with 'registrable' professions, like doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lawyers, engineers etc.......you NEED to get registered with the official registration body to be able to work.....

Ok, so I really questioned my graduate pathway option when my friend suggested Uni of Edinburgh to be a much better choice, so

1)Is a Bmed science research degree really worth it? From what I understand if the paper turns out well it can really boost my CV when I'm applying for postgrad. What would be the general criteria for postgraduate entry? Do they take in account of your MBBS cGPA, and/or research achievements?

2)Will I be losing anything if I choose ANU or UQ? I know that as compared to Edinburgh students my clinical experience may be slightly less, but perhaps I can take up more electives in the time being to cover it.

3)I’ve also been suggested that choosing Aus as compared to UK will have the advantage of more working opportunities. How true is that? I know it’s quite hard to work in UK, but there’s no guarantee that Aus wont face a similar situation in the near future right?

4)Honestly, the main point that I cant get over with Edinburgh is that everyone seems to think that it’s prestigious, has its own status. How important is this actually? Will It affect my chances of getting into a postgrad?

Thank you for listening.

Q1: Hey... it's a requirement for you to get to the graduate schools. If you opt to go UQ or ANU,the duration of studies is the same as the undergrad students as all of you will be spending a total of 5 1/2 or 6 years(if u join the feb intake) to finish up your studies. Plus, it'll definitely boost your CV... It's an extra degree after all.

Q2: All of our PMS have their own teaching method and they will make sure you come out as a good doctor with adequate knowledge to diagnose and manage patients.

Q3: Adik, who the hell told you this.....? Australia is already facing a problem right now whereby more doctors are graduating than the places for housemanship are available. But, if you are talking about any sorts of working opportunity, unless you don't mind working in rural areas, Australia indeed has more jobs for u... Hmmm....... Postgraduate wise, read about limeuu's post.....

Q4: It is prestigious. It's in fact considered our best PMS of all. But, it's none at all important to you because your chances of being able to get into UK's postgraduate training lies in the question that whether you, are more eligible than anyone else in the EU or are you that brilliant for them to ask you to stay. If you do, they'll take you. If not, sayonara...

Yeyechan's points are quite true. Most students are going for the most prestigious med schools, if they are able to get in. In fact, these people have been aiming for the best of the best, like Harvard. I hear people talking about "who cares about prestige" but they are really the ones who can't imagine themselves being in these schools (due to a lack of competitiveness, financial or other reasons). To be honest, who on earth doesn't want to get into the best school? To meet talented students, To work with better facilities, more famous lecturers, and the list goes on..
It is a dream for everyone. About prestige, is it that important? The occupation of medicine itself is associated with many prestigious elements. I often hear "fathers" talking about their sons graduating from Edinburgh med school, Harvard med school, etc, "my son is studying medicine in UK, etc". Prestige has been important in Asian families and still is. If you are really good, you are being treated differently, and people see you differently.

About choosing AUS/UK med school, being a doctor in these countries is a pain in the butt. Many of my aussie friends (by many, I mean more than a dozen), after completing their MBBS, were told to leave the country without getting an internship. These friends I knew, worked extremely hard, ended up like this. People have been telling me, "hey, you can't blame Australia, because you already know the rules of the game before coming in this country to study". They are indeed correct, that, many AUS schools actually solemnly declared "international students are not guaranteed an internship in Australia, and places will be reserved for the locals." Well, this is medicine. Its insane :-P

Thats why some preferred local program than PMS, in the end, u come back to M'sia.
Some might tell you they dont care about presstige, but they are the one who study the most. Just do your best for EOS2,3,5 and leave the rest to luck.
