I came back to Malaysia because of a death in the family, have to respect the elders now right biggrin.gif But I'm a bit concerned about the economy in the US so I'm no hurry to go back to the US. The UK doesn't seem particularly interesting either unless like robertngo said I can get a 100k GBP/year job.

Speaking with a UK accent is cool, unless you're an American citizen. biggrin.gif So where are we sending the kids to school again to pick up this british accent?  tongue.gif

They pay me 3.2k per month (for probation period 3 months), 3 times bonus per year, got fuel allowance, will get car + petrol card after 5 years (if i stay that long here). If u know GDP architect, there it is. Architect of Pavilion, Ministry of Finance, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, The Troika, Sri Maya Condo and many more...

Hi ,

I didn't mislead anybody , I am just telling the truth , we should work for interest then only come salary, if you are getting high pay but are not enjoying the work, what for ?
Maybe Engineering not paying as high as banking line in average , but still enough for someone to live, and engineering field is stable , not much affected by economy if compare to other sector .
Take myself as an example , I am a Mechanical Engineer, 8 years experience, I am 32 years old, my salary last year is 7k , now I am getting 15k because I been approached by a head hunter company to work in oversea , now I am in Shanghai as an expatriate, all my living expenses cover by company. I have met many malaysian working here in Shanghai, most of them with engineering back ground. rolleyes.gif
There are no such thing as engineering get lower pay or finance sucks , all depend on individual commitment and target.
Please understand that I am not showing off anything or promoting engineering , just want to point out that if you commit enough you can achieve anything in any field.
Cheers biggrin.gif

I did talk to people in the finance side, but the high paying IT jobs on the finance side seems to be drying up quite a bit especially due to the subprime mess hitting the finance industry. Having been to London on vacation before, I think I'd rather work in the US or Australia for the same amount of money, London is insanely expensive.

You might want to qualify that by stating PROFESSIONALS like engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, IT professionals, etc generally get crappy pay in Malaysia.

By all means go around telling people how good ur salary is. For pete's sake look at other people's post be humble before u even try claiming the throne. I am only 27 and i am making close to 15k. So wat makes me? A nobody. Because some people i know doesnt even need to break a sweat to hit that high. That's the magic of being in the correct industry. But as for myself, i am an engineer already married to my work. I have to work double time and I am always "outside'. So the $ doesnt do justice as oppose to office folks.

Comprende?

I'm 23 (turning 24 at the end of the year), earning about RM14K a month. It's pretty much a no brainer that I'm in the oil and gas industry. And yes I do work offshore but not on an oil rig.

Somebody said earlier in this thread that ppl in the oil and gas industry 'don't have a life', well I really take offense with that statement. You make us out to be like a group of zombies working for an evil corporation.

You're forgetting that we have our rotations.. I spend 1 month offshore (working regular  10 hrs shifts) and then I get 1 month vacation time.. and the paycheck keeps coming in even during vacation. During my time off I spend time with my family, I go traveling, I hang out with friends, and live my life. Also I get the satisfaction of being able to take care of my family financially. So yeah if that's not 'a life' then I don't know what is.

So if anyone out there is considering a career in the O&G industry.. I say go for it! See what it's all about first and don't just dismiss it as one of those jobs that you think you're not cut out for.

wanna earn big bucks?

become sea-going marine engineer or mariner. just study diploma for 3 1/2 years.

MISC just revise their salary.

fresh grad diploma student will be paid rm3900(basic) for starting. plus allowance, total salary will become around rm6500-7000. the salary is tax free. meal provided. no need for transportation when going to work. no money needed to spend on petrol when working.

downside is, you'll be far away from ur family for about 4-9month. haha. coz you'll be living in the ship. sailing with it. risky job. well, that's what going to be my future career.

btw, the figure i get it from those who are working. so, it is not a lie.

I see quite a few post about going to Uk and work...

I am currently working in London as a graduate engineer. At the starting salary of 2KGBP a month...after tax...its like 1.5K++.
Because of the high rent, 1/3 of it goes into paying for my room(room only....lol.)

But the rest I can spend quite comfortably and can easily save 500gbp a month or more if I want to. Just need some determination.

The problem in the Uk is the boloody high tax....is my salary doubles..guess what..my take home will be less than 3K a month(although that would be nice..)

Frankly.....for me there is a limit where more money does not equate more happiness...I would be more than happy to trade a 80kGBP/year job for a 250kMYR job in malaysia. The quality of life back in malaysia is just wayy better especially if family frens is here.

A recent survey says that a salary of 45kGBP in the UK would satisfy most people...and thats about right in my calculations.

That said....because of the higher currency, I can buy stuffs I can only dream of if I were to work in malaysia( HDTV, PS3, paying for the air ticket back home myself..bla bla..)
Downside is crappy food....crap weather...

From the UK govt point of view, when comparing salaries between UK and Malaysia, RM200k/year in Malaysia is equivalent to getting a 80k GBP/year salary in the UK. I don't know where they get the conversion rate, but it's what's stated when you do the UK Border Agency assessment for UK PR/work visa. I assume it comes from a rough comparison between standard of living between the two countries.
