The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, comprising a small archipelago approximately midway between Australia and Sri Lanka. It is part of Southeast Asia and is in the Southern Hemisphere. The territory's dual name (official since 1955) reflects that the islands have historically been known as either the Cocos Islands or the Keeling Islands.

The territory consists of two atolls made up of 27 coral islands, of which only two – West Island and Home Island – are inhabited. The population of around 600 people consists mainly of Cocos Malays, who practise Sunni Islam and speak a dialect of Malay as their first language. The territory is administered by the Australian federal government's Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, and together with Christmas Island forms the Australian Indian Ocean Territories administrative unit. However, the islanders do have a degree of self-government through the local shire council. Many public services – including health, education, and policing – are provided by the state of Western Australia, and Western Australian law applies except where the federal government has determined otherwise.

The islands were first discovered in 1609 by William Keeling, but no settlement occurred until the early 19th century. One of the first settlers was John Clunies-Ross, a Scottish merchant; much of the island's current population is descended from the Malay workers he brought in to work his copra plantation. The Clunies-Ross family ruled the islands as a private fiefdom for almost 150 years, with the head of the family usually recognised as resident magistrate.

The British formally annexed the islands in 1857, and for the next century they were officially administered from either Ceylon or Singapore. The territory was transferred to Australia in 1955, although until 1979 virtually all of the island's real estate still belonged to the Clunies-Ross family

The first claims of treasure buried on the island came from a woman named Mary Welsh, who claimed 350 tons of gold (about $16 billion in today's money) raided from Spanish galleons had been buried on the island. She had been a member of a pirate crew led by Captain Bennett Graham, and was transported to an Australian penal colony for her crimes. She possessed a chart showing where Graham's treasure was supposed to be hidden. On her release she returned to the island with an expedition, which had no success in finding anything, with the points of reference in the chart having disappeared.[33]

Another pirate supposed to have buried treasure on the island was the Portuguese Benito Bonito.[34][35] Though Bonito was hunted down and executed, his treasure was never retrieved.[35]

The best known of the treasure legends tied to the island is that of the Treasure of Lima.[36] In 1820, with the army of José de San Martín approaching Lima, Viceroy José de la Serna is supposed to have entrusted treasure from the city to British trader Captain William Thompson for safekeeping until the Spaniards could secure the country. Instead of waiting in the harbor as they were instructed,[37] Thompson and his crew killed the Viceroy's men and sailed to Cocos, where they buried the treasure.[34][35] Shortly afterwards, they were apprehended by a Spanish warship. All of the crew except Thompson and his first mate were executed for piracy. The two said they would show the Spaniards where they had hidden the treasure in return for their lives – but after landing on Cocos, they escaped into the forest.[35]

Hundreds of attempts to find treasure on the island have failed.[35][38] Several early expeditions were mounted on the basis of claims by a man named Keating, who was supposed to have befriended Thompson. On one trip, Keating was said to have retrieved gold and jewels from the treasure.[39][40] Prussian adventurer August Gissler lived on the island for most of the period from 1889 until 1908, hunting the treasure with the small success of finding six gold coins.[35]

Malay/Melayu does not necessary mean only Malaysians, Sumatra especially Riau area got high population of original "Melayu" people.. same culture and practice.

Based on location, these are possibility migrant workers brought in from Indonesia..

Some years ago there was a movement in Indonesia claiming that those Cocos and Christmas Islands as theirs and demanded the Indonesian government to 'take it back' from the Aussie.

Those Malays there probably never have any experience in dealing with RM or Rupiah so to think there are happier with AUD is a little bit naive.

Cocos and Christmas were colonized by the British (British Subject). The closest major British colony in South East Asia in the Straits Settlements. So majority of the islanders were from the Peninsular and North Borneo. There are some from the current Indonesia region. Back in 1950s, there was an effort to bring back those Malays from the Cocos Island and settle in Sabah, aptly name Kampung Cocos in Lahad Datu and Tawau.

LOL the malays from Cocos island would definitely protest against it after how they see their counterparts were treated in other indon islands.

Wow you got your history spot on. THese Cocos malays actually descended from our malays. Quite amazing today, they live and work in an island paradise and being Aussie citizens.

Its easier to migrate to areas that are not the peak areas where people want to migrate.
