McD learned from the recession that people might walk out of shopping malls without any bought items, but they likely wont walk out with empty stomach. People are more lenient with their cash when they're hungry, or their kids are pestering them to tears to eat at McD/KFC because of all the ads.

Though I do think it's a bastard's move for them not to announce it.
