Dear oil painting teachers

I want to paint a portrait with oil on canvas...
There are dirt on the canvas so im thinking of painting black background color to cover up thoae dirt...
Do you think its necessary? Or i should ignore the dirt and start doing my outline first then only the background?
Please help

depends on how noticeable the dirt in the first place i guess.

Hi... actually this canvas is those premade oil paintings with numbers and lines for reference...i worked on it a little but decided to change my work due to request..so basically the lines are all over the canvas with a little paint on it..

DO double coating one by one that may be helpful to reduce the dirt. You can paint black but this may not produce beautiful things.

Please help why is there dirt on canvas? do note that oil if painted on sand or dirt may eventually flake (peel off). it would be better to use a sandpaper to ensure the dirt (or other stuff on the surface) is reduced slightly prior to painting.
