Will teach you a life hack. Set both SSID on 2.4GHz, and 5GHz, to be identical to each other, and your devices will connect to the strongest signal available, and disconnect from weakest signal. Done.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I just got my Tenda ac18 recently. I seem to have a problem when I set both 2.4 and 5GHz to the same ssid. It keeps disconnecting and is not stable. When I separate them into 2 diff ssid problem is solved. Wonder what seems to be the problem.

I'm using stock firmware, not planning to update firmware at the moment.

Another thing is, I'm not able to get the full 100mbps even when I plug in a wired cable directly to the router. Only able to achieve around 90mb/s. About the same as using wifi. I'm on Unifi 100mb/s plan.

Appreciate any suggestion. Thanks.

Not sure what the problem is, it should be smooth. The transition is probably not as smooth between 2.4GHz and 5GHz. 90Mbps is considered good. Did you try with another router?

I've used a single ssid for DLink 842 which came with Unifi and also an old TP-Link router. Both were OK with single ssid. However this AC18 is very much faster and stable with a longer range when I use separate ssids.

Am happy with the wifi, but am wondering why am not able to get the full 100mbps for wired connection. Used the yellow cat5e cable that came with the router.

Not sure why that happens. Probably firmware issue. Cat 5e should be more than enough. Again, could be router’s issue.

Checked with Tenda Malaysia live chat and apparently it's normal for up to 10% bandwidth loss (he said even the best and most expensive routers also lose up to that amount of bandwidth). So in my case, a 100mbps unifi with 90 odd Mbps speed should be normal, even with a wired connection.

With regards to the SSID problem, it seems the Tenda AC18 does not have signal sensing built-in and thus does not recommend to combine the 2 bandwidths into one SSID.

On the whole, I'm pretty happy with the router. Much faster and more stable than the Unifi provided dLink and the old TP-Link router I was using.

Yes and No. First and foremost, please select Telekom Malaysia as your speedtest server, this is proven to get consistent result as your test is conducted internally within the network (not going through MYIX).
I said yes for typical bandwidth measurement, it is true that you will not be getting 100% of your subscribed bandwidth, it is because you need to take into account of TCP overhead in your test. You can get your "promised" bandwidth by using this TCP Overhead Calculator.

Read more about tcp overhead here

Based on my testing to TM server, I always get extra 5% of upload and download speed.

Yes I've contacted TM and they reset my port this morning. Will test this evening. If still doesn't reach close to 100mbps then they will send a technician over to check further.

Update on Unifi tech home visit today. The tech changed the modem and viola... I'm getting 100+ mbps on both wifi and wired. Thanks to SilentVamp and neurom. Cheers!

Errrrr.....replace modem or router?

modem (BTU). Nothing wrong with the router. Both dLink 842 and tenda also can achieve 100+ mbps. Was on the old Unifi modem, issued since I subscribed to unifi when they first launched it.... The tech was reluctant to change, saying 90+ mbps is norma.. lucky thing I told him that on the lowyat forum many users are able to achieve 100+ mbps... then only he changed the modem.

Hi all,
recently just got my turbored 500Mbps. Thinking of this budget router AC1900 AC18 router.

Just few question is this router stable so far.

thanks

have used it for about a month... must say it's very stable. Much better than TM issued dLink 842. No regrets buying it.

Are you on stock firmware or changed to Merlin firmware?
Wondering whether should i flash to Merlin firmware or just go with the stock firmware if there isn't any significant speed improvement. I'm on Unifi turbo 300Mbps.

stock. Enough of tinkering with routers.
