Went to a guitar store in 1Utama and first tried a seagull, was a cherry back n sides, then asked to try their martin. The staff brought me in and ask me to tune the guitar myself, with ears ,which I couldn't . Then I played the guitar n said the words in the topic, and to my surprised he was triggered rclxms.gif

He said if I cant tune the guitars by ear, it means my ears aren't good enough to differentiate a high quality guitar from a lower shakehead.gif

Any of you experienced this before? I still find Martins overpriced , RM8000 for a guitar that sounds like a RM2000 one doh.gif

Lol, Guitar Collection, really hope they get pushed out by someone else

The reason why 8k martins cost that much is cause they are made by old people in USA with top drawer import woods, Martin methods of production. Seagull on the other hand is the opposite, its cheaper cause it uses china methods of production and it sources wood from its backyard - similar to a godin.

They have their differences, the martin standards are nitro finished, MOP inlay, well figured woods ; the seagull is poly finished, mother of toilet seat inlay and whatever they can find in their backyard. Then theres the whole martin history and experience going on (a new martin guitar smells amazing). They both also play very differently.

Now both make great guitars, personally i would take a seagull to a gig or a friends house, also because of "china production" the guitars from seagull/godin can be a huge hit and miss from a quality perspective.

If you think they are no different, then you are the lucky ones, wont need to throw cash on expensive martins.

i'm more surprised in how arrogant the sales man in guitar collection.. ask customer to tune the guitar? that's his f**king job. so what if customers can't tune by ears? the customer can afford the guitar. u blow? that's y they are forever selling guitars and seeing the expensive guitars bought by ppl who can't even tune the guitar by ear.

well, dont need to learn to tune to exact pitch...
but everyone should learn how to tune to relative pitch la.
so even if ur 6th is like Eb or slightly off...at least get the other 5 strings in tune relative to it...so when ur testing it in the shop strumming chords or whatever etc it sounds in tune to itself.

Even pro musician use electronic tuners. Not everyone can tune by ear accurately.. Roughly can lah..

yea. unless he/she is a perfect pitch. else, one string needs to be in tune in order for the rest to be tuned perfectly.

If your 6th string tuned to F by ear instead of E and then u tune the others, high chance some will putus !!
*
nope...since that's only half step up.
but i think if u play somewhat, u can feel the tension already and know ur too high.

Rm20,000 or rm800 guitar, no difference if dunno how to play.

Youtube got those european fellas playing fingerstyle with inexpensive guitars. When they started, some of their guitars only a few hundred ringgit unknown brand one. But they got a few million views. Then later got sponsor. The sponsored guitar also cheaper than martin or Taylor.

So, how expensive guitar you have is no use. How well u can play is more important. Best if u use kapok and play like Sungha Jung.

Haha I agree with you
That's why I only upgrade my guitar to Lakewood after playing Sungha's songs for eight year and can perform his songs flawlessly.
Before I got this guitar I always told myself that I shouldn't degrade a lengendary guitar with my skills.
Now when I use this guitar to play all the old songs I have learnt and it sounds just like what Ive dreamt of nod.gif

Seriously if I can play half as good as Sungha, I will use a super cheap guitar and put out some youtube video.

Out there, generally those who can't play insist on expensive guitars. Really good guitarist seldom need to even buy their own. They can play any guitar and most of the time get to play sponsored guitars.

When have you seen famous footballers buying their own football boots?
*
umm, u do realise sponsored means only from 1 brand right...
but many other guitarists out there even tho sponsored by say fender...go out of their way to purchase good vintage guitars from other brands.

a good guitarist can adapt for sure...but i've also heard them complain about the guitars given to them to play ad hoc.

just like football boots, even tho sponsored, well a certain footballer is currently suing new balance for their boots causing injuries.
a couple other footballers previously under new balance have had similar issues...so gg new balance.

I don't think getting sponsored is so easy
I think it takes more than the ability to play arrangement done by other guitarists
IMHO I nid to write arrangement by myself n sound very good n unique, which frankly I can't , I don't know how to arrange songs
It only takes time to master an arrangement written by others , but it takes both time n talent n lots of musical knowledge to write one
