Sidwell refused to sign the new contract and will become free agent in summer so Reading has no choice in this case.

Reading have made Kalifa Cisse their first signing of the summer.

The midfielder has signed a three-year deal at The Madejski Stadium after arriving from Boavista.

Reading have been tracking the 22-year-old for some time and Royals director of football Nicky Hammond claims they beat a host of clubs to the Frenchman's signature.

"Kalifa is a 6'2" central midfielder who has also played in defence," Hammond told the club's official website.

"He has real athletic ability and the technical attributes that should be well suited to the Premiership.

"Having spent time with him and his family in Portugal, we believe he will adapt quickly to life in England and his personality will fit very well with the current squad."
