Wow, you guys can afford a quadcore processor. thumbup.gif
But why in the world you guys are using DS3. blush.gif

If you guys can afford a quadcore, i think you guys wouldn't have trouble to buy expensive motherboards, no? tongue.gif

agree, the gigabyte dq6 would come in mind. or the asus commando biggrin.gif

haha since thread closed ill tumpang here:

QUOTE
Multipler is there for intel to set to mark on their processor speed for the market according to the grade of the processors based on stable default speed at a certain voltage.

QX6700 and all the extreme processors are unique in that you are free to set the multiplier to that u desire.

Your problem is most likely that you are pushing your RAMs too hard, When you get a stable cpu speed at 1:1 you can adjust the ratio to 2:3 or 4:5 so that your RAMs would be at 1000MHz or so.. adjust the RAM timings (5/5/5/18..6/6/6/24.. 4/5/5/18 etc..5/6/6/20) and voltage accordingly(up to 2.2 would be ok)

If 280 fsb is all you can do the by all means increase the multiple to 11.. that would bring the cpu to 3.08GHz. I reach 370 by dropping my multipler to 9.. to get to 400 and beyond I may have to drop to 8 or 7, all the while keeping the cpu vcore within 10% the default voltage. There is also chipset/FSB/bus voltages to consider. Increase FSB speed would be better than multipler increase is because it increases bandwithwidth for more data feeding the 4 cores.

so basically i should be maximizing FSB more by lowering the multipliers? can provide more specific details on doing so? like the vcore/vfsb voltage settings etc etc

Trial and error(and a lot of time/testing).. no short cut .. could also be a limitation of the chipset.. (generally I dont increase voltage of any part more than 10%) ... that is why if you are impeded by fsb.. increase the multiplier. 3.0GHz at default voltage is no problem for My 2 quad cores.
*
ok so first push the FSB, then multiplier when its at its limit i take it? ill try with 8-9 multipliers then and push the fsb more for now. and aim for 3.0 ghz with default vcore (the heat is insane sad.gif)

and may i know the default vcore again? i forgot already and lazy to reload bios defaults again (sorry yea, and at office still sweat.gif ) ur also on QX6700 right? so should be ok to use the same vcores and push from there(~10% from what you said) and see how far i can go... not expecting much anyways since i dont wanna fry my cpu, but im considered lucky since ive been vcore'ing it on 1.5v and even few times goin 1.6v lol (asus there indicator reading blue (ok) color somehow rofl!) but didnt manage to boot for the most part, and if able to boot, the temperature is kinda retarded.

1.35volts ..... most likely

k this time manage to push it to 3.2ghz... 350x9

everything fine until i orthos 4th core... keep getting error... but i ignore it, and test the other 3 cores over night... morning wake up blue screen doh.gif doh.gif

think overheated? thats my guess since the 3 cores runnin on ~90celcius before i sleep.

think ill go for a 1:2 fsb/ram ratio as my ram default clock speed is high already... but how much fsb can i push? 350 seems to be the limit and anything more results in a non bootable pc sad.gif

So this thread has evolved to a quad core thread again... I started one 7 mnths ago... but was combined with the dual core conroes..

Quazacolt... try backing the fsb a little.. say 345MHz... to make sure it is not Ram speed issue try running one instance of orthos stressing the RAM... My cpu core 3(4th) is also a culprit that prevents me from going beyond 370.... Primming only the 1st 3 cores (1 hour or so).. i was able to go to 3.7/3.8GHz and ran some Pi test
*
hehe maybe previously not many quadcore users, even now, also not many still.

ram shouldnt be the issue, since ive ran extended ram test and orthos ram stress previously on stock speed (1066mhz) but now on this oc'ing attempt im running pure 1:1 ratio (underclocked my rams basically) and having 5-5-5-15 default latency. so shouldnt be a problem on ram side.

still curious on how ur able to get the fsb up this high and still able to boot, cuz i wanna try that and able to have my ram oc'ed or 1:1 ratio at a much better end clock speed.

Why is that happen? So when u disable core 2 and 4, is that mean ur system is not rock stable right?

...wtf disable core 2 and 4?

hmmm... i always wondered how come dual core has lower clock... hmm.gif
*
prolly limited by heat? (wild ass guess) if you've ever used core temp on dual/quad core CPUs you'll notice that the cores are much much hotter than the actual CPU chip/die itself.

anyways, managed to clock my cpu to 3.1 ghz with 310 fsb and 10 multiplier. everything is stable cept my core 4 is always throwing a fit on me on orthos :/

anyone else having probs with core 4? or is it normal?

my 4th core is stable at 3.4Ghz at 1.4/1.425v cpu voltage. beyond that will error no matter voltage applied. The other 3 can go to 3.7/3.8 or so. at 1.55v or so
*
this time pushed 3.15 ghz, but multiplier at 9 with 350 FSB. up'ed some vcores and vfsb, testing orthos now... but again, after test 4-5 stupid core 4 throwing fits again vmad.gif

think i can ignore the error on core 4? lol

wanna ask quad core user here. u guys are getting high score benchmarks. but wanna ask, did u feel any real world benefit? was asking coz may get a quad core year end.
*
this would solely be dependant on your applications/programs that you are using whether they are ultilizing the 4 cores or not.

anyways, had some stress test done, and its still a failure cuz i left my comp on for 3ish days and stress it after that... 120 degrees celcius on all cores and after 20-30mins pc auto shutdown... prolly to prevent thermal death sweat.gif sweat.gif

just let it cool down for the day and will stress it again when i get back.

anyways im settling for a 3.1ghz speed, 345 FSB x9 multiplier. 1.45 vcore and 1.4 vFSB

letme know if these settings are good or need changes (so far stress tests are promissing and my 4th core isnt really throwing a fit. only thing left is thermal shutdowns) basically wanna maintain around the 3ghz mark, and around 1.4ghz FSB clocks.

once CPU done, onwards to rams!!! drool.gif

I sure hope so, but is anybody running quad core on a PSU with 500w or less? hmm.gif

should be enough, but not recommended.

I think for longer life for PSU u need around 650W and above. Mine 560W also dont know when should I change again.
*
getting higher watt PSU does not make them(PSU), or your pc parts last longer.

whoa bro...cool it there man... 120deg Celcius on all cores?
either your software is getting the wrong temperature or you screwed up the thermal diode already...

you should not reach 120'C bro... by that temperature, your CPU should have been dead/shut down already...
*
yea dude, not shittin ye. thermal shutdown only occured around close to 140 celcius... lol

i dunno, only happens on orthos stress on all 4 cores (4 orthos instances)
other than that, its chillin at 50-60 celcius. darn wierd :/

ok ok...

my idle temp usually around 59'C to 62'C depending on my room temperature...

so it's about right if compare your chillin and my chillin' temp...hehehe...
*
core temp or using other temp monitoring software? core temp is showing 30% to twice my temp reading from asus pc probe

yup... super stable...not a single issue after about 3 months of using...

put it this way, i think you won't find any normal application that will push all 4 cores to 100% all the time....so actually your CPU won't heat up that much at normal application use....

that's my take la... maybe i'm not using any CPU intensive application...
*
same here, but im runnin on 3.07... and yea orthos passed 12hr stress test on all 4 cores XD
