Hi Fong,

What about X540L-AXX1015D Intel i3-5005U 4GB D3 500GB Intel 15.6" DOS Black? is this ok to get? Cause my friend prefer SATA than SSD due to small storage.

dear sifu-sifu...

asking for model suggestions or even challenge my requirements...

my requirements:
* i7 8th gen processor
* 16GB RAM (can be 2x 8GB)
* 256GB SSD + 1TB HD
* 15" screen
* abt 3kg
* around rm5k to rm5.5k

good if can get:
* 2 years warranty
* more than 60Hz refresh rate for screen
* those colourful and programmable keyboard
* windows precision touchpad... ideally buttons not underneath. no buttons also i'm ok.
* keyboard without numpad. dun expect numpad to be useful for me.

mainly used for gaming (not hardcore but will plan to play some PUBG, Overwatched, LoL, Starcraft, etc), movies...

higher specs listed above is because i'd like the laptop to be able to last about 4-5 years before i get a replacement. i know by year 3, it might be considered outdated... but the games i'm going to play will still be the same or so...

of course good to also know the recommended model's pros and cons... like whether cooling system is good, after sales support and warranty, etc...

many, many thanks in advance...

just to also share... there are some models that I have been exploring a bit... but some of the mainstream brands do confuse me a bit with their models and range. i have seen: Illegear Raven and Illegear Onyx (out of budget ATM), Asus TUF FX504... i think it was MSI GE63 or sth...

You can't find a laptop that can meet ALL your requirements with that budget. For that budget Dell G7 is the best. G3 needs some tuning for better thermals, also slightly worse build quality.

Thunderobot laptops are based on Clevo barebones. Also, all options above have cooling issues (911 SE and FX504 have terrible cooling, base model with worse CPU will help in better thermals)

Vivobooks and HP Pavilion/generic line are very mediocre. Especially build quality.

Consider Chuwi stuffs, most of their laptops have IPS panel which is great for your use case. Also acceptable build quality in general.

Hi everyone, appreciate your recommendations:

1. Preferred brand : anything reliable or has good warranty
2. Budget : prefer below RM3K but can be a bit higher
3. Usage : Stock research and trading, TV / movies, spreadsheets, word processing
4. Screen Size : 13"-14",
5. Other requirements : will probably need 8GB RAM, usually hv 15-20 browser tabs open when doing research, prefer below 1.8kg

I'm looking at the Lenovo Ideapad 510S and 710S, are these models any good?

No brand is 'reliable', it mainly depends on model and luck

Consider Acer Swift 3 14 (SF314-54, new model), just need RAM upgrade. Lenovo Ideapad 320s 14 also OK but need RAM+SSD upgrades. Dell Vostro 5471 too if you don't mind the fairly small battery (may need RAM and SSD upgrade depending on which variant).
