Hi. I’m new to this forum and need some help with my Hokkaido planning. My party of 5 (2 adults with 3 kids) will be visiting a few places in Hokkaido for 10days in Early December.
(1) is it easier to rent a car or use public transport?
(2) Can we use Uber in Japan?
(3) for short trip of about 20mins/13km, how much would be the taxi fare?

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Then we will try self drive then.

(1) Do you know if Japan is strict with car seat requirements for kids? Mine is 4.
(2) I’ve googled for SIM card and found a few companies. Do you have any recommendation for one? I need it for about 10 days. 2 SIM cards.
(3) are children allowed in Onsen?
(4) has anyone tried driving from Niseko to Hakodate?

Thanks!

1.

If u're within Sapporo, public transportation will do.

If you are going to the outskirts, better rent a car. It's worth it if you're going with a family. Can be even cheaper than paying for a bus to go to the outskirt (to and fro).

2.
I'm not sure. I didnt check it out when i was there. LOL. Either I was using MRT/trains or rented a car.

3.
Taxis in Japan are expensive. Might as well rent a car. There are taxi fare calculator for Japan on the net. U can see for yourself.

Did you get the HEP? Is it more worth it for a 10 days drive from Sapporo to Hakodate the furthest? Thanks.

Driving in Hokkaido is not that difficult actually. The cars have English GPS and can use Google map as well. I'm at Hokkaido now and there's not many cars on the roads outside Sapporo. But then if Sapporo only public transport should be good enough

Thanks for your reply. Regarding the SIM cards, it’s a bit confusing and hope someone can help me out.

(1) from some travel blogs, they mentioned to get SIM cards from Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) instead of directly from the mobile provider to save cost. Examples of MVNOs are Mobal and Japan Tourism Sim. Any suggestion?

(2) another one I’ve found is Japan Welcome Sim from this website https://wow-j.com/en/sp/sim_wifi/. It looks affordable. Has anyone tried it?

Thanks.

1. Very. Make sure you don't break any law because they have police all around. And don't forget to apply for international driving license.

2. What are the ones you've Googled? Mind sharing? Probably you should share which are the ones in your mind and ask for members' opinion and whether they've used these SIM before.

3. Sure, why not. As long as you teach them basic etiquette (no running, jumping into the water, splashing water etc). It is not a pool, so a lot of respect and no-nuisance is expected if you're bringing kids to the onsen. Others paid to enjoy some quiet time and relax, thus make sure they're not inconvenienced or affected by shouts, screams, cries. Although it's hard to control children but when they start throwing tantrums, time to get them out. I'll actually suggest you don't bring them in to allow yourself to have some relaxing time alone.

Onsen water is very hot though, see if your children can take it.

Thanks for your reply and link. As I’m going for 10 days, I have only 2 choices and the Japan Unicom seems to be cheaper then the NTT Docomo. Have you used Unicom before? Is the network reliable?

I’ll be driving for 10 days in Hokkaido this December with 3 young kids.
(1) Is it easy to find a rest area for toilet stops or some light bites? What should I look out for?
(2) Is it convenient to use Waze in Japan?
(3) anyone has experience driving in Hokkaido? Can you share what I need to be prepared on?

Also, as I will be arriving in the New Chitose airport, it says that we can buy the So-Net SIM card through a vending machine at this airport.
(1) has anyone used so-net before? How reliable is the network
(2) is it easy to setup the SIM card on an iPhone 8 Plus?

Thank you in advance for your replies.
