Will be going to Tokyo to visit my brother early Nov this year, 9 days trip in total.

Days 1-3 will be around Nikko/Kinugawa/Nasu area
Day 4 will travel back to Tokyo
Days 5-7 I was planning to get the Hakone-Fuji Pass and spending a night each at Hakone & Kawaguchiko
That leaves the last 2 days for Tokyo itself

Can anyone who has used the pass before tell me which area is the best to stay in Hakone? Was thinking of settling my own dinner so that I can save some cost by not having the hotel/ryokan provided dinner.

Cheers!

Nikko-Kinugawa is awesome, highly recommended. Would be happy to recommend you Hippari Dako restaurant for dinner in Nikko. The yakitori (chicken skewers) is so so so good that I ordered another 2-3 sticks on top of my set dinner (that comes with the skewers), the best I've ever had! In Kinugawa, you have to check out the suspension bridge lust.gif you can check out my itinerary and review on Page 1 Post #1 on Nikko-Kinugawa and some other places in Tokyo that I went in May. Can't really recall, but if I'm not mistaken, bought the Nikko All Area pass: http://www.tobu.co.jp/foreign/en/pass/all.html Bought the pass in advance (2 days ahead) at Asakusa station (Tobu).

Rather than spending 3D 2N in both Hakone and Fuji 5 Lakes, I'll actually recommend to do 3D 2N in either 1. Both places have so much to offer and it was barely enough to spend 3D 2N in Fuji 5 Lakes (my trip - previously). We spent 1 night in Lake Yamanaka and another night in Lake Kawaguchi. So much to see and so much to do (because the days ends at 5pm) but so little time.

Hakone - you can consider staying in Gora.
*
Thanks for the recommendations, the first night we won't have dinner provided by the accommodation so happy to check out Hippari Dako smile.gif
My brother will be renting a car so transport is not an issue for the Nikko-Kinugawa-Nasu leg of our trip.

Interesting that you mention 3D2N at either one place because at first glance, Hakone seems to be pretty much doable in a day.
Fuji 5 Lakes should probably deserve an extra day as the area seems huge and the attractions look scattered around.

If you had to choose between one, which would be your recommendation especially for the beautiful autumn leaves?
Thanks!

Both location has their charm but Kawaguchiko area will usually be the preferred choice because it's closer to Mt. Fuji. And you can get beautiful photoshoot of autumn leaves and Mt Fuji at Chureito Pagoda. If you like theme park/roller-coaster rides, there is also Fuji-Q Highland.

Hakone is more well-known for its hot spring and ryokan
*
Yeah the main reason for me to go to Kawa would be that scenic pagoda and of course Fujisan.
Not really interested in theme parks so no worries there.
Will be experiencing quite a bit of onsens and ryokans at Nikko-Kinu so I'm leaning more towards Kawa over Hakone at the moment.

On a sidenote, is 2 full days in Tokyo enough or should I allocate 3?

really depends on individual

for shopping lovers, definitely 2 days not enough to fit everything. basically you need to cover Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku and Ginza at least? + Akihabara if you are gadget geek and anime/manga fan

that's on top of other attractions like Asakusa, Ueno, Tokyo Tower, Skytree, Tsukiji Fish Market

then special interest attractions like Ghibli Museum, Snoopy Museum, One Piece Museum, Odaiba Gundam, Tokyo National Museum etc etc
*
That does looks like quite a huge list to cover, but always planning to go back next year when my brother gets married.
So it's either I do Kawa 3D2N + Tokyo 2 full days or Kawa 2D1N + Tokyo 3 full days.

I know which I prefer haha!

Thanks for your opinions sweet_pez, really enjoy reading your insights.
I think we have decided to drop Hakone for now and leave it for next year so that we can concentrate more on the Fuji 5 Lakes area.
At this stage, most likely going for the 3D2N option and leaving Tokyo for the last 2 days. I think 2 is enough as I'm not a huge fan or crowds.
Would you suggest the Fuji Pass for 3D2N costing 10k yen or is there a better alternative?
Thanks again!

Nikko has a lot to offer. Doing a 1-day trip is a bit rushed... will suggest you do 2D1N with Kinugawa if possible. You can refer to my experience and info (with photos) @ Kinugawa-Nikko on Page 1 Post 1. Imo Kinugawa is very lovely and I had a really good time there; more so compared to Nikko actually. However Nikko is an important part of the visit with Toshogu Shrine.

Agreed.
So much so that I am doing 3.5 days for Nikko/Kinu/Nasu smile.gif

Awesome! So seems like there's a change of plan biggrin.gif share your experience when you're back!
*
Yeah I can't wait go to be honest, November seems so far away sad.gif
Current itinerary is as follow:

Day 01 - Arrive Narita morning, bro to pick us up and head straight to Nikko. Will focus on the shrines.
Day 02 - Kegon Falls / Chuzenji Lake / Ryuzu Falls / Senjogahara / Yunoko Lake
Day 03 - Kirifuri Kogen & Falls / Setoaikyo Gorge / Ryuokyo Gorge
Day 04 - Nasu then head back to Tokyo for the night
Day 05 - Saruhashi / Chureito Pagoda / Oshino Hakkai / Yamanakako & Yuyake no Nagisa
Day 06 - Shosenkyo Gorge / Kai-Zenkoji / Momiji Tunnel / Momiji Corridor and light-up at night
Day 07 - Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway / Kitaguchi Hongu Shrine then head back to Tokyo for the night
Day 08 - Tokyo
Day 09 - Tokyo
Day 10 - Back to Melbourne

Days 1 to 7 will have a car hence can travel to more places which are otherwise hard to reach or takes longer on public transport.

Jelly that you're driving around so you're able to cover more places and don't have to worry about missing the bus! During autumn it gets dark at 5 or 5+ so you'll have to make sure you're at the last attraction by 4 or 4.30pm; otherwise won't be able to enjoy it.

I'll recommend the Suspension Bridge in Kinugawa if you're around the area thumbsup.gif
*
Yeah that's the downside of autumn, shorter daylight but that's alright, we'll just have to wake up earlier and leave earlier tongue.gif

For the bridge, did you mean Kinu Tateiwa Otsuribashi (鬼怒楯岩大吊橋)?
If so then yes, I will be there biggrin.gif

This one very hardcore

so so long didnt saw this kind of itinerary already.
I tot only me will do this kind of style. (Focus on Tokyo surrounding, not the city it self)
*
Only made possible with a car and a brother who's been living there for 6+ years.
In honesty, may not get to every point of our itinerary so will make changes as we go along.

will not enjoy the trip

take care...

Like I said, we will adjust as we move along.
If some places are not do-able then I'll just drop them, no biggie.
Having 4 drivers should help in terms of tiredness tongue.gif

It's hard to suggest time as everyone would have different pace. Granted there's time, I would have easily spent 2.5 hours or more at Toshogu alone. The steps are fine, it's not too steep wink.gif

I don't know why i end up seeing a lot of stock images but this is it: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-nikko-jap...-171872257.html

In the case of such shopping, I'll suggest Uniqlo in Ginza. There are 12 floors, but on the 11th floor is where a number of t-shirts that are Japan-only edition is available. Definitely worth checking out.

I just checked. Apparently Sagano Train doesn't run during winter....  doh.gif  Sad that I will be missing this attraction.

Btw, there is a epidermic going in its rounds in Japan. I heard there is travel advisory not go to Tokyo for now.

Ok that's a first for me.
Heading over in 2.5 weeks time so that's a bit concerning hmm.gif

Done! Thanks
It happens after a natural disaster. As long as the government acts fast, it can be contained within a reasonable time. Will suggest anyone going Japan soon to at least be vaccinated to avoid contracting any disease etc.
Just make sure you've all got the basic vaccinations. By far there's no official news saying it's not safe to go or there's any widespread disease.
*
What sort of vaccs do you suggest?
I will ask my brother later if he has heard anything.

I just asked my brother and seems like he knows nothing of this mysterious pandemic.
However if it's cold/flu or measles related then all good coz I had my jab early this year (if it lasts that long).

Nikko is currently approaching peak, very nice leaves around the shrines.
Ryuzu Falls up in Okunikko has already shed most of their leaves already.

My nikko trip is next weekend
Wooo.....

Nikko itself should be peak next week and there is the Light Up Nikko event at the shrines so you should be good!

But don't really need to bother with Ryuzu, Yudaki, Senjogahara etc coz not much to see already.
