All shinkansen pass through Shinagawa. You can take Hikari instead of Nozomi. Assuming you are taking shinkansen back to Tokyo, then Japan Rail pass will do. Else it is not worth it.

No need for luggage retrieve if you make sure they done "check-through" for your luggage tag (when you get your 2 boarding pass)

btw...I saw my web reservation there asking for me to put in passport details, which seems it will do auto-check-in for me 24/48hr before flight.
Is it advisable to do so? can i let it check in web, then print boarding pass at airport while luggage drop, or i should print myself?
