Hi all, i Wanna buy a camera but am not sure to which. I’m not looking for something too pro as I’m a newbie.

My budget is around 2-3k, should I look at the lower end of dslr or a digital compact camera?

Am currently looking into canon g7x mark ii & canon M100. Opinion please ?

I wanna pictures of quality superior to what a phone camera can do, most pictures I take are food, people or just photo for Instagram in general.

And will you guys recommend buying online via site such as 11street or other platforms ? Cus the price available online are much more attractive than the one retail...

are you ok to bringing a camera around like just going to a dinner or high tea?

I think for instagram purposes, phone camera is more than enough.

A5100 with 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 may just get you around rm3k. Would suggest sigma 30mm f1.4 but if you mind the bulk, just stick with sony 35mm.

You still want to stick with canon, m100 with 22mm f2 pancake lens would do.

Go for mirrorless camera first, then only move to dslr..

I started with Nikon V1 few years back then bought wide lens and accessories.. Still satisfied up to now.

I haven't change my V1 yet up to now, the photo quality is still as good as most of my DSLR kaki friends'.

I guess I'll continue with mirrorless in future and forget about the hefty DSLR.

...................not sure what you mean by go mirrorless first before moving to dslr. I think you meant to say beginner budget friendly camera like a5100/a6000 or D3400 before moving to bigger brother a7II or D750 and such.

Used V1 quite sometimes ago. The image quality is indeed very good from a 1" sensor (the RAW output is cleaner than RX100 due to twice lower pixel density) and the AF is quick too.
But the system now quickly surpassed by high end compact that offers the same size of sensor, but with way compact form factor and bigger aperture lens that gives sharper image than a typical 18-55 kit. biggrin.gif

I have the same interest at you. I shot mostly Food and Street for Instagram purpose. Current setup is Sony A6000+Sony Zeiss 24/1.8 as main rig and Sony 50/1.8 for telephoto. Would suggest u to get a Sony a6000 body and maybe a Sigma 30/1.4 as starter. 30mm is a good focal length for taking food. But u might need to stand on a chair to get a wide flat lays. But prime does excel compared to zoom or kits lens due to its nicer bokeh which will makes the food to looks more outstanding.
