Hi, I am a new mom and this is my first experience as a parent.

I have a question about taking our pram down an escalator and flat escalator (if there is no lift).

Is the pram going to be in front of us (and we hold it tight) OR...
We take our step down the escalator facing backwards first then take the pram after us (I cannot describe it well here. I saw some people do it. Hopefully you can understand what I mean) OR...
We just hold it tight in front of us and go down that flat escalator just like normal (just like when we push a supermarket trolley down)?

Which one is safe? Or anyone have another technique? It seems scary to bring the pram down escalator and flat escalator with my dd inside.

Thanks

I think the safest way (since there are no lifts) is to carry your baby before pushing/carrying the empty pram onto an escalator. Better if you have someone to help you. Because you read about incidents where escalators malfunction and suddenly stop. This inertia could throw you off balance or your baby out of the pram if he or she is inside.

first and foremost, of coz its not allowed.

secondly, if u decide to use the stair escalator, it depends on the design of the pram / stroller.
I think the ramp escalator should be easier and doesnt matter much.

the best is to use elevators, if not available, carry baby urself if not confident using the escalator.

perhaps you can consider a good baby carrier.

if u know a shopping centre don't have lift, i recommend u get a baby carrier. If u definitely need to use a stroller, carry the baby and get someone else to push to stroller down the escalator for you.

"We take our step down the escalator facing backwards first then take the pram after us" -<--- we did this stunt before and is not recommended. At some malls, the security guard will even stop us.

im not sure about shopping malls that dont have elevators.... is this even possible?

usually my issue is the elevator is not big enough, because besides us with strollers (sometimes 2 strollers waiting for elevator) there will be normal people too lazy to walk and use elevator.

i cant brain this people.
sometimes see "
1) young people
2) go only one floor up
3) stairs available or escalator available
4) but still crowding the elevator for us with strollers.

Carry your baby!!!

NEVER EVER put a baby in a pram going up or down an escalator. It's not worth the risk. If you're too tired to carry. Wait for the lifts.
Full stop!

Also - if you can, hold your baby on the inside of the escalator. That means, if you're standing on the right, carry your baby over your left shoulder.

1. dont do like this, not safe.
2. use baby carrier if can
3. if stroller, use lift instead of escalator, travellator still ok..especially u are alone
4. yes, sometimes it is quite hard and troublesome because when the lift door open 10 times, 10 times the lift is full of ppl and your stroller cannot get in..yes, I admit I do just like wat you are trying to do, only there is at least 2 adults travel together, 1 adult carry baby and another adult control the stroller at the escalator. You find your best way to control the escalator, different individual handles differently. As long as the person can confidently and comfortably control the stroller.

if only 1 adult, no matter how will wait for the lift..

Easier to say. Some people are not considerate, healthy young people hogging the elevator just to go up or down 1 floor. mad.gif

True...I visit empire gallery at subang pretty often. Many youngsters/staffs could not be bothered to use the escalators. I don't understand why would they want to wait so long when escalators are so much faster. Back then when I didn't have a baby I've never used the elevator once.

I never heard of local malls with no lifts.

if there's one... stop going there. Nothing justifies endangering babies (in strollers) on the escalator.

the other day waiting with many other parents for lift and doors open lift was packed and all relatively young able bodied adults inside. we all glare at them and not a single one dare to make eye contact LOL tahu malu. hahahaha.

anyways i wont high horse myself, yes i've taken the escalator with the stroller many times. just focus on the job and dont be stupid about it. and understand that strollers first set of wheels cannot be pushed off the escalator, should be lifted and placed down on the landing. #flame.suit.on.

anyways. so happy those stroller days are over. at 2yo we stopped using cause so damn annoying to take it out and load the things and push and what not. dunno how those parents tahan push their kid till 5+

maybe those still pushing their kids because:

1) they dont mind, car very big, no issue to keep stroller.
2) kids very lazy to walk, always want them to carry. parents lazy to educate properly, just layan them and use stroller.
3) They use it as a trolley to carry shopping items/goods as well. kill 2 birds with one stroller. huhu.

Firstly dont ever do this in white mans land as clearly this is not allowed in escalators. My friend did in UK and was warned off.
For me, I prefer "We take our step down the escalator facing backwards first then take the pram after us " .

I understand that it is frustrating when trying to take the lift with a stroller. Most of the time it is very time consuming and many able-bodied people mostly taking the lift.

Some people say carry the baby when going up the escalator. Then how about the stroller if u are alone with the baby?

Below is my experience to push a stroller while using the escalator:
1) Push stroller to go up an escalator:
-Reverse the stroller and move backwards towards the escalator
-Allow the rear wheels of the stroller to first touch the escalator steps. The front wheels of the stroller will not be in contact with the escalator steps.
*Due to the weight distribution will focus on the rear wheels of the stroller, the front of the stroller is not heavy therefore it is easier to hold the stroller firmly.

2) Push stroller to go down an escalator:
-Push the stroller towards the escalator.
-Allow the rear wheels of the stroller to first touch the escalator steps. The front wheels of the stroller will not be in contact with the escalator steps.

But the safest way is still to take the lift.

Only allowed way is to use the lift. Don't risk the baby and don't risk others.
