I'm thinking of buying 4k TV today but got zero experience since this will be my first purchase

Is it worth to buy in the first place? Thinking of buying 48 inch from Sony that I saw the other day at the shop. 48 inch enough of I should get anything bigger?

Or is Samsung better?

I don't want anything fancy like smart TV all that nonsense since it'll be plugged into my computer and PS4.

Any recommendations what to look out for? Budget less than 3k

When buy TV, go big or don't buy

Atleast 55 inch or above

3k below can get Samsung 55 inch

I don't understand how 4K with 3D works. Do you need the glasses to see 3D?
*
Many (if not all) manufacturers abandoning the 3D TV. There is not many content out there and it is not really selling. Yes you need 3D glass for now but there are experimental panel that requires no glasses at all

I am one of the early 4K UHD Smart TV users since 2015 when the 4K UHD Smart TV hype started. My first 4K UHD TV was from Sony; model Bravia 49x-8300C, an entry-level 4K UHD Smart Android TV from the company price at RM6990. At that time, Sony's 4K UHD upscaling was the best but Samsung was catching up to close the gap. I enjoyed everything from SD, 480p, 720p and 1080p content with the TV and it never failed me. Its screen was based on the IPS panel, so everyone can view the screen at any angle.
Netflix started to enter Malaysia market at that time so I immediately paid its monthly RM51 four-screen UHD package and I was blown by the 4K content offered. My Unifi connection was 50 Mbps; it was able to keep the 4K UHD streaming alive with no stutter. Since it was an Android TV, I also installed iflix, Viki, Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll apps. Chromecast support was superb (the TV has built-in Google Cast receiver) and screen-mirroring (with Miracast) was quite easy. Anyway, I could sideload non-Android TV (standard Android) apps.

The TV still works fine with no issue even today and it is still supported by Sony (for firmware upgrade, the latest Oct 2017) even though I could not enjoy the HDR evolution due to a few limitations in the hardware and Sony's business decisions. http://www.sony.com.my/electronics/support...id-/kd-49x8300c.

Just to tell you: once you are into 4K UHD, you will never look back. If I want to buy another 4K UHD Smart TV, I will buy 4K UHD HDR OLED panel with Android TV for easy integration with Android devices and because I am also an Android app developer. Be aware that Sony "Smart TV" can be non-Android TV and it can be Android TV (as long as it mentions "Android TV")

Sony is the only one with OLED + Android TV combo
LG uses WEBOS

Is 4k streaming fast enough for you?
Thing is I worry if the resolution is the same but the display gets bigger, it will lose it's sharpness. I might be illogical though. Will go window shopping again to see.
Yup I have ps4 Pro. Got PC also.
*
Streaming should have no problem but the amount of bandwidth required will depend on the quality of the stream. For a ballpark estimate of the speed required for streaming live video, here are the estimates that Netflix provides to its users (which are roughly transferable to live streaming):

500 Kbps – lowest required speed for streaming
1.5 Mbps – recommended speed for quality viewing
3 Mbps – Standard Definition video
5-8 Mbps – 720p and 1080p High Definition
25 Mbps – 4K Ultra High Definition

Most TV has built-in upscaler. Even with FHD source from Astro, the result is still very good. My relatives asked why my FHD picture looks so sharp smile.gif

Nowadays very hard to find 4k tv without hdr. Even entry level lg 4k tv got it. And they do sick scaling up as well. Very nice. All for below 2k at 48 inch.

HDR standard is messy now. Many try to push their own HDR type.

what problem for 4k smaller than 55"?
*

Bcoz below 55". U need to watch around 1 meter from TV to see different of 4k & FHD. So not worth it.
Bigger than 55" better.

Standard living room viewing distance in Msia (for terrace/condo) is around 7-10ft. That's why many k/trad expert will say at least 55" for 4K TV.

Do u have 4k contents to view on the 4k tv you are planning to but? To tell you the truth all cheap 4k tv is crap. Better spend 3000 on a fullhd tv rather than 3000 on a 4k tv.

Got difference between FHD and 4k meh?

Oo. Looking at the graph 55 inch is memang good size for my arrangement. I think I'll abandon 48" for now and look at 55" or higher.

I wouldn't bother about that. For me, it is just good for study only. With higher resolution screen, you can sit nearer and see thing sharp. True. If you have lower resolution screen, you see fine sitting further away, but it is also fine if you have higher resolution TV.

Practically, who would buy big screen to watch at close distance? The reason you buy big screen is that you can sit farther and get to the detail. The chart talks about seeing detail at closer distance laugh.gif

make sure u buy 4K tv with HDR(not just 4K), nothing less.55inch and above for better visual experience.
well for this type of TV, hardly u can find a non-smart version.
if u can afford, go for mid/premium series, not the entry-level tv. good black level and brightness is important for HDR

u must read regarding IPS vs VA panel too
