Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am driving a 2017 Mazda 3 GVC. Recently, I hear ticking sound from the driver side front dashboard. This ticking/taping sound does not always come by and once it does, the whole driving journey will have the ticking sound off and on. I noticed the ticking/tapping sound when the engine rev. It is very irritating. Anyone encounter this? Appreciate any guru here can give some advise, what is the problem and how to rectify this . Bring to SC, they cannot detect this sound. I tried attaching a video in here, can't seems to be able to attach.

I have the exact same issue for more than 2 years. The noise would appear during initial acceleration and disappeared when I reach a certain speed. I complained about this issue to a few service centres but no one seemed to know what exactly the problem. I finally found out why after talking to this one Mazda service center manager. It seems to be due to carbon build up in the engine and it caused some issue with the GDI.

The service manager recommended me to try this Mazda-branded Deposit Cleaner (picpic) which you pour in inside your fuel tank after a full petrol fill-up. At first, I was skeptical since I believed the ticking noise came from another issue. But after a few drives, the noise almost completely disappeared! The manager also recommended me to rev the engine when driving once in a while to prevent carbon build up. Also, I guess filling up with RON97 fuel once in a while would help with the carbon build up? The cleaner cost around RM45 a bottle if I'm not mistaken.

tl;dr - Carbon deposit build up causes the ticking issue. Use Mazda-branded Deposit Cleaner to 'clean' your engine.

Not exactly sure whether your ticking noise is the same as the ticking noise i'm facing. Reason being, the rate of the ticking noise in my car remain relatively same regardless of engine rev and speed. If going by the analogy of the explanation you received, the faster you rev, the rate of ticking will increase.  I also received the deposit cleaner from mazda, and had no improvement on my end.

Frankly, because the engine is direct injected, almost impossible for the deposit cleaner additive to work on the carbon deposits, as the fuel spray almost never reach the back side of the intake valve (maybe minor amount when the engine is on atkinson mode; unlike traditional port injected method where the fuel is injected before the intake valve).

The mazda deposit cleaner is rather expensive and you can get cheaper equivalent alternatives (like the bardahl concentrated fuel injector cleaner). Other than cleaning the deposit using the hard labour way, the only preventative method to consider is reduce cold starting, using good quality engine oil, and avoid too much traffic jams. A periodic highway rev blasting is somewhat good as mentioned by the manager your dealt with, but it won't prevent carbon build up.

Thanks for the explanation, I stand corrected regarding carbon build up. Perhaps there are others things besides carbon deposit that the deposit cleaner seems to clean or clear up? Whatever it is, the deposit cleaner seems to help. I'll give the Bardahl cleaner a go next time.

you mean you have been driving below 3k rpm alll these while?

Mostly yes, I don't really rev a lot to save on fuel. On highways, I tend to drive at speed between 110-120km/h, which translates around 2.7-2.8k rpm.

Been smelling petrol outside my car after performing 60km service about 2 weeks ago. Will send for a check tomorrow. I suspect there's a leak somewhere.

Meanwhile, any of you guys have experienced this?

My 2015 Mazda 3 rear dampers (shock absorbers) seem to be leaking according to the service centre. They quoted me RM399.90 each (total: RM799.80) for B45A28910B.

Question: Should I go with the original Mazda parts or is there another other brands that are fine?

How does KYB Excel-G perform compared to stock absorber? Does anyone here have experience switching to KYB shocks?
