Hi, where do u guys buy EO? Can recommend me any shop around KL or ampang pj cheras balakong that sell below than RRP? i go thru this forum thread, some suggest buy at tesco but no shell brand.

Im looking for Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 for my next service..RRP at service center is RM260, chepeast i found at other workshop is RM230.

Then i found online shopping price around 170-190. But some of the info at bottle label is written in thai font, manufacture at hongkong. Is it okay to buy this?

Im not car enthusiast, so my ques may sound funny lol

I find it safe to buy branded genuine Shell/Castrol/Mobil/Total from Tesco/Giant/Aeon Big either online or hypermarkets.
Hong Kong or Thailand fonts etc should be ok, not saying all those 'guerillas' could be trusted though .... so do exercise care.
If you must get only Shell Ultra 5W40, then your choice is limited other than unknown online 'guerillas'.

ive been looking at hypermarket but couldnt find this brand. For next service i think i just buy at rrp only. Need to find more info as ur advice.

Based on ur experience, do different market product (ie thai market, MY market) has different additive? the product is compatible with our local car?

No difference , all genuine branded oils (like Shell etc) from overseas that is blended to a certain API and/or ACEA specifications has similar additive package as 'registered' with API/ACEA.
Hence they are suitable for cars in importing countries that recommends the 'appropriate' specifications.

Say for example , your MB xyz car recommends oils with 'MB approval 229.5' and there is a 'genuine' Shell Ultra 5W40 with:
QUOTE
Specifications: API SN/CF; ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4; BMW LL-01; MB approval 229.5, 226.5; VW 502.00/505.00; Porsche A40; Renault RN0700, RN0710; PSA B71 2296, Ferrari. Meets the requirements of Fiat 9.55535-Z2 and Chrysler MS-10725

....whether blended in Hong Kong, Thailand or UK would carry the same additive package approved by Shell (International) , and hence this oil is suitable for ALL MB xyz cars across the world.
However , do note the quality of gasoline used though as in sulphur ppm which would influence the oil change intervals, not oil suitability!

TS, give a try to this guy and report back,
http://www.11street.my/productdetail/shell...CFUGijgodi5MH_A

Disclaimer:I have no interest in 11Street and this reseller.
'Genuine' Shell oil here does not mean oils from Shell Malaysia, which are real pricy and cut throat.

since u are using Sh Ultra 5-40

To me I don't think the EO additive will be different between markets as they have to conform to the EO spec rating.

the most important factor is the EO spec rating to your engine requirements, where the brands itself is listed in the respective sites,
SH Ultra 5-40 has a rating of:
MB229.5 - 226.5
Bmw ll-01
Vw 502.00 - 505.00
porsche a40

An example, some seller (EXN) will sell EO that have the MB 229.5 ratings
like this seller
EXN Fully Synthetic Lubricant SAE 5W40 API SN/CF Engine Oil 4LEXN Fully Synthetic Lubricant SAE 5W40 API SN/CF Engine Oil 4L
They have even faked their MB 229.5 rating cert on their webpage
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

But on Mercedes benz official site, EXN 5-40 is not approved

As long as the EO is of reputable source, it should be the same.

if your car is just local made car P1 p2, I am not too sure if one should pay for such high rating EO into it.

info on ratings
MB 229.5 approved "MB Longlife Service Oils" - extended drain intervals beyond 229.3 oils, to 30,000 km
MB 229.51 approved "low ash long life" - for cars with EURO 4 diesel engines or Bluetec exhaust particle filters, and longer service life than the 229.31 oils

If you want to save money just go for semi-synthetic. Unless you own a track car you are just wasting your money with fully synthetic.

I saw few sellers with reasonable price. In lazada/real life Vanli Spare Parts from Jln Ipoh. Else there is someone [mayalab] in this forum is selling some good EO too. Not trying to promote or what. Just trying to help. I, myself also get my EO from them too. cheers

Depends on the car also, but generally your comment is valid too in local scenario.

If TS' car calls for MB229.5 or BMW LL-01, then this Ultra 5W40 is suitable. Most semi-syn does not comply.

But if it's used on Japanese or Korean petrol engines calling for SN/SM , then using Ultra 5W40 for <8000 km OCI is a real waste.
Btw, I run 16000+ km with a Total Semisyn 10W40 A3B4 in a 2005 Avanza and blotter spot test pictures shows no problem.
Currently hitting 10000 km, I have no plan to change out in the next one month or two.

Glad that your immediate requirement is sorted out nicely, and real value for money.
Btw, what's your typical OCI oil change interval so far ?
With a free and easy Blotter Spot Test, you may be able to assess the quality of this oil and also engine condition.
