My wife's cousin is a Malaysian musician whose name some here may recognize and she's considered one of the most successful in the family. So it is possible to make money but you have to basically be the best of the best. Average musicians of course go nowhere.

I don't think actually selling music makes much money. She earns money from live performances (corporate events, private parties etc.), teaching, even product endorsements I think.

what's her name? She teaches music too?

So i guess the music is just to get you famous enough to eaern money elsewhere?

Musician - those who actually have qualification, can make a living teaching and some by performing as sessionist and such. The higher your qualification, the higher level you can teach so higher pay. Also higher demand as performer or even examiner for test. They also get to be sessionist for recording purpose and more money there...
In another word... you need qualification.....

You want to make big bucks or you just want to cari makan?

Its possible to make a living simply by being a music teacher + session musician. You won't really get rich, but the money is more than decent.

You don't have to sell CDs in the street. That's only if you want to be a superstar or something.

that's ironic. the road to be a superstar is a poor one

There is actually such a thing as formal vocal training. It actually does help, and a lot of singers actually undergo it themselves. It makes a big difference.

This might be a terrible example, but you know Andy Lau? When he first started his singing career, he was terrible. He's actually quite a decent singer now no thanks to several years of vocal training.

A somewhat more recent example that I'm familiar with is the lead for the Japanese band Ikimonogakari. Yeah, they did that song for Naruto if you watch anime.

She used to sing like this in back during the band's indie days:

She's not actually bad, but its obvious she's an amateur. There's no power behind that voice and it does sound like she's singing from the throat instead of her diaphragm.

But she attended musical college and she came back sounding like this.

As you can tell, there's a whole lot more power and confidence to her voice now.

he is also in juara lagu 2018, see the list of finalists, see which performer also writes his own lyrics.

Clue: only 2 singers in that list wrote his own lyrics, so that narrows it down for you...
