Review GTX1070 stronger than 1080 Max-Q?, Testing out by using MSI and ROG

Hi everyone, me and my pals just got our hands on the model with GTX1080 Max-Q and were eager to try and doing a short review and testing comparing to GTX1070. *Disclaimer: We are only testing based on the model we bought, the statistic and figure might be different with other model.* The model we are using : MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider & Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 V1 Most of the users buy top level gaming notebooks with the require spec of GeForce GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 graphics because of the greater 3D performance and gaming power. But you have to sure that you could squeeze all of the power to drive highest performance as possible, but the output will still be limited due to the design limitations.
From what we know, as a lower power version of GPU, GTX1080 Max-Q designed for slimmer gaming notebooks, but accompany with lower heat, that also made the GTX1080 Max-Q with lower performance, even a bit lower than regular GT1070 on GE63VR 7RF Raider, based on the GPU-Z clock difference, you could see the GTX1080 Max-Q lack of the Core/Memory clock around 500MHz, so it might be around 20%lower than regular GTX1080. GE63VR 7RF Raider GeForce GTX1070 manage to got highest performance at Turbo Mode When we got the both machine on hand, the first thing we test is the 3D performance and see how is the gaming experience, especially those with GTX1080 Max-Q design. And surely, we must also know how well the fans are doing to get the perfect performance. From what we see, the GE63/GE73VR models comes with dual Whirlwind Blade fans and 7 heat pipes become Cooler Boost 5 and the GX501 is using the Max-Q thermal design (as below) and both are doing a very fine job keeping the machine is constant temperature.GE63VR 7RF Cooling Design GX501 Max-Q Cooling DesignFurthermore, we tested the two high mobility beast with 3D Mark 11 Performance mode, GE63 got a higher score comparing to GX501, then we switch the testing to 3D Mark Fire Strike, which also got higher score around 14400, this is fairly high performance on a notebook with a regular GTX1070.

More test with DirectX 12 Benchmark

Thanks for the review and the comparison. really would like to know more about other comparison too, although Max-Q design is slim but it's hella expensive.

I believe the difference in form factor is at play here. Do you think you can compare this against a MSI GS series 1070 or ASUS GL series 1070 laptop? With both slim form factor, would be more interesting to see MaxQ's difference

sorry, i'm not really familiar with gaming laptop. but when i saw the 2 photos cooling design. totally different pipes design. may i know which cooling is better than? Asus better? or MSI better?

Hey, i'm not sure about ROG. But recently i joined MSI grand league on december, they're using GE 73 VR to play dota 2, csgo and overwatch. i was playing overwatch during that time, it turns out that the laptop not heaty at all. then i did some research on it, it says that Ge73 vr has a cooling system called "cooler boost 5". It has 4 exhausts, 2 fans, 7 heat pipes and 31 fan blades in this beast. lol
