So I took my watch off yesterday - put it on bedside table (not charging)

Put it on this morning and noticed hairline cracks around every edge, as well as one crack from the bottom left hand corner. According to some Googling this has been somewhat common due to battery bloat

Fast forward a couple of hours, and the whole screen has come off apart from the sides .. (hanging on by the flex cable!)

It’s a year old in 5 days - I saw some managed to get this kind of issue done under warranty overseas in Apple Store.

Has anynone had this happen in Malaysia, and managed to get repair / replacement under warranty?

You should be able to get a replacement watch from the Apple service providers in Malaysia.

Hope so, will contact Apple next week.

Just worried they’ll try to say it’s my fault or similar and try to charge a silly amount for a replacement.

I think if you send it in before the warranty is over you’ll be fine.

FYI, my son’s Apple Watch series 0 was replaced with a series 2 watch this June 2018 due to battery bulging for free. He got it replaced at Apple Store in Tokyo. They gave him a series 2 as series 0 was no longer available and they had stock of series 2 at that time.

I have also checked with service providers here and they would have replaced it with a Series 1.

So if your watch shows battery bulging or any defects before warranty period, it should not be any problem getting a replacement.

Ok thanks, hopefully that’s the case!

I can’t say the battery looks like is bulging - that’s what I found as a reason online.

Seems like the only logical solution though considering it happened whilst I was asleeep!

Hi, did you manage to get Apple to repair or replace your AW3 after the warranty period?

I have a similar case as yours just that my AW3 died(couldnt boot/charge) 1 month after warranty expired. Made an appointment with Apple to send in the watch and guys at QCD checked it and say they dont repair AW an instead offer me a full replacement of the watch for rm1200. Which is too much, rather topup to get a new watch.

So i just ordered a battery for my AW3 from ebay and will do the swap and see whether the watch boots.

Cheers!

I went to the service center in 1U and they claimed it’s not an issue with the battery ... and that the damage is due to the user because there’s some markings on the watch. It’s still in warranty BTW (until today .. 24/11)

Apparently when the battery swells the screen pops off clean rather than cracking like in my case.

I’m going to take some pictures of the inside and get opinions online - as I know this happened when the watch wasn’t even being worn.

Sure it’s not in perfect condition anymore - but it’s not going to be considering it’s been worn every single day for a year!

And yeah they offered me the same .. replacement for RM1.2K or something. Not worth it .. might as well spend a few 100 extra and buy a Series 4.

For your case the cheapest option is to get a screen replacement. Get an AW3 screen from ebay/china and swap the screen. The cost of the screen though is around USD170-200. Which is quite expensive.

My AW3 has been sitting in my drawer as the screen is cracked all the way around the edge still, and I replaced it with v4 at the time.

Looks like I should be eligible for replacement now :

Hi, you may send for the Quality Exchange program. I send mine AW2 weeks ago, and today collect a new AW3.
Good Luck!

Good news ... I actually bought an AW3 when they rejected the repair last time.

My whole screen came off (Ie dangling by the flex) with a hairline crack all around the edge of the screen. This happened whilst I was asleep at night and watch was on my side table.

Watch had a mark on one side and the Apple place in 1U said it was due to damage and not covered by warranty ... in my opinion small scuff marks are bound to happen on a device that’s on your wrist all day long!!

I’ll go back there shortly now this program is out and update back.
