Has anyone here was once a gamer that just couldnt shut up regarding new game releases, consoles, PC hardware? over the years with youtube streamers, i started just watching them play instead of playing it myself. Has anyone experience this transition? Also I start to lose interest in new games, "they are always different but still same", there arent just a lot of games that give me the WOW element. From Hardcore->casual->non gamer.

You are not alone. Too tired to play games especially coming back from work. I got GG setup for PC + PS4. Both has dozens of games but lazy to play. Maybe we already entered to another stage of life, I mean we had grown up / getting older.

Same here.

Over the years, im reduced to a casual mobile gamer. Even on mobile, i rarely plays the game as hard as i used to be.

There are alot of reason in my case;
- same plot (nfs, csgo etc)
- internet always disconnected (online game)
- people who didnt understand that some game cannot be paused
- getting old
- harder to test new game (test 1st and then buy)

Yea.

stopped for about 5 months, time to time i still check on game related stuff. whenever i fire up a game, i close it within 15mins. in the past I would even skip classes to play some stupid game, now nothing seems to excite me.

Here are the few games that really got me into
Vindictus- used to play till 3-4am
The world ends with you
Persona 4- P5 was great but it feels like it is built on top of P4
the last of us- overrated, but i never felt as deep for a game before

Once a gamer, but not too hardcore.

Despite I got a very high spec PC, only got 2 up-to-date games were install, but also only play at weekend.
You can say real life as main factor.

Right now the new games doesn't feel like before.
Now I'm feeling like an old fag, I'm more enjoy old games.
Return myself as a part time otaku.

i know how it feels bro, reality and growing up sucks. i have a pretty decked out PC too, i always have a bad habit to custom the graphic settings before playing anything. Games now are over-hyped and recycled. Maybe we all are waiting some game to ignite the spirit back.

All of us has outgrown gaming to a certain extent. It's completely normal. I was once known as the hardcore gamer among all my friends. It used to be something like a badge of honor, but now I get annoyed by the mention, because it sounds as if I only play games for a living.

I still like to follow gaming news and watching Youtube videos, but actually playing them feels like a chore now. Like all of you, I also used to be able to play games all day long and not feel bored. Now I feel it's a waste to spend long hours playing games when I have other things to do.

Occasionally a game does come along that I play obsessively. Currenty it's Cuphead. The game combines two of my passion: old timey cartoons and 90s era shooters. I've been coming back to that game quite often. After I finish it, who knows.

Yeah I rather watch Twitch streamer instead of playing it myself.
When I get the urge to play from watching streamer having fun with the game, I play for 10min and already close the game.

Ya pretty much, and sometimes i would even stop watching half way. Many new games now are so repetitive, story or gameplay for both just feels like a grind. the recent one for example, Shadow of war. take fort, take fort, betray, kill, recruit, take fort. yea yea i know the rivalry thing, orcs are fun and they have unique personality. But hey the whole game is about taking fort, or put it more simple, killing orcs. The story circles around some stupid rings. it gives me the feeling , if you took 1 fort you have alredy played the whole game, continuing is just a repetition.

u just havent found the right game..then again games these days arent as good as they used to be. Full of bullshit marketing and microtransaction, also grinding is wat the new gen love. I've resorted to competitive games, faster and keeps the brains alive. classic games like sc2 are still games which are top of my list to gid gud at.

modern games have a lot of sidequests and playtime lengthening fluff, it's not like the old games where you can now finished it in one day, but back then it took weeks to do so yet it kept you enticed enough to keep playing to the end.

i rarely watch Youtube let's plays or Twitch streams, because watching does not capture the exploration feel of playing yourself, unless it's a very linear story game.

it's normal to outgrow games due to age or time issue, but IMO if you truly love gaming, you would always find something you like to play, be it old game or new game. sometimes you just burned out if you force yourself to play when you don't enjoy it anymore. i understand the 10 minute syndrome as a lot of games in my backlog currently suffer the same fate because of this and Steam sales don't help. no more buying games unless it will be played right now and actually grab your attention.

and sometimes maybe there are other hidden gems or genre that you have yet to discover. some old classics still have much fresher gameplay and creativity but due to dated graphics or UI, many younger players would never touch them.

and some people have huge backlog that they feel the need to complete it, but end up feels like a chore to go through games you don't even enjoy.

i find myself enjoying AAA games less and less, have not yet found a AAA title that is worth buying full price since joining Steam 2 years ago, preordering games is also a letdown. most of the time find the new games overrated and not as great as the hype.

i play mostly short/small indie games now and occasionally a AAA game. can't seem to get into long story driven games with lots of talking/cutscenes. i still like replaying or discovering old classics from the 90s-2000s, dated graphics does not bother me (although 4:3 games in widescreen is kinda sad..).

to me i define a gamer as a person who has a love for games or at least one game.

if newer games do not ignite your passion. you are not "not a gamer". you simply don't like those new games.

if you can name 3 games that you like/love and spent more than 100 hours, congrats, you're a gamer to me.

whether or not you continue gaming is a different story.

personally i used to be so into so many games, but that was back a decade a go where games were a rarity. now, entertainment is so abundant and corperations making shitty games i just stopped buying newer games unless it really interested me. for some games that i do have interest but no time to grind, i d watch youtube for the "movie version"

Part of the problem is that it's getting harder and harder to be impressed as we grow older. I speak as someone who's become jaded with a lot of things in life. Little things that used to amaze me like magic shows, a trip to the zoo/aquarium, watching a movie in the cinema, have now become common. Once you have "gotten over" something, it becomes very hard to recapture that magical feeling. I would actually LOVE to be surprised by something new, but nothing seems to be doing it for me.

In the end, I usually go back to something from my younger days, meaning, something I am nostalgic for. I like to reminisce on times gone by, like 70s-80s music and TV, 8-bit and 16-bit gaming, etc. But I can't claim that today's entertainment is not as good as the old days. Just like I don't like today's game as much as the old ones, it's inevitable that someone growing up with games in this era will not like the games that will come out sometime in the future.

i don't think it was luck to become famous youtuber/streamer, but hard work also. when you become full time content provider it become like a job, it's not as easy as it looks to be honest.

true that Asian work hours is higher. but also depending on type of job and priorities. some people prefer or would rather socialize than gaming, or these who game after working rarely go out for entertainment. some have kids and they also manage to game still. so imo a gamer will always find some time however little to game wink.gif

i do feel that way too, but there's always something new to discover, not just in gaming but in general. can't possible know/learn everything so long as we keep mind open and sometimes try new things we never thought to do, i bet there's still somethings that have wow factor for you. for me it is probably curiosity and hunger to uncover something good that is worth sharing with others.

yea it's an inevitable sign of being old fart when you prefer nostalgia haha. 90s-2000s PC gaming is still the 'golden era' for me, because the gaming market seemed different then, it seemed devs were more creative and there was more emphasis on gameplay than graphics. so many genre defining games then. now games costs more to develop and it's all about the business model, just see the current trend of remastered games lol.

I do want to be genuinely surprised again, but it's getting harder as I become older and more grizzled. Even traveling becomes tiresome sometimes, and I've traveled a lot too. That's not to say I don't come across new experiences occasionally. Those are the moments I live for.

Ahem. So back to gaming topic. Yup, I would say the pinnacle of PC gaming was back in the mid 90s. I've repeated my opinion on it many times, but I still stand by it. The 90s was when it seemed new tech was always coming up, new genres defined, and gaming in general was still unexplored. Seeing something like Daytona USA run in 60fps, with bleeding edge graphics to boot, was insanely mindblowing for me. I had the same feeling when I saw Virtua Fighter for the first time. Sure it looked fugly, but I knew right then that polygonal gaming was the future.

Today's games, although they can still be fun to me, are just iteration of things that have been done before. I suppose that's why I find Cuphead to be so endearing to me. Old school gameplay combined with 1930s style animation? They already had my support when I first saw the trailer.

Long time ago, games comes with with genuine form and variety gameplay. Even old CS, Starcraft, Warcraft, C&C, PS2, Xbox & Nintendo are freaking awesome back then.

Now games industry so called AAA games are more to loot box, stupid season pass & everything seems too rush.

yeah man, i've seen LGR's vids, it's nice to be a big box collector in the US. old school big boxes are so rare to come by here in Malaysia, especially when back then piracy was just as rampant. and physical PC games are now kinda extinct due to Steam.

these boxes are often thrown away to save space at home and in stores. i only have a very tiny collection, i guess they hold nostalgic value for me and i love the boxart packaging design, manuals and maps that come with it. sometimes looking at the screenshots on the box makes me want to replay an old game again biggrin.gif i am sure you older players still have these kept somewhere in storage thumbup.gif

Yes its up to everyone ,to each opinion as well, these streamers and youtubers got lucky for me because back then youtube and facebook coding and algorithm for monetary and so forth werent tight ,now its getting tighter .
It is also up to each person of how they control life as well.

ANd farking seriously ,when there's some politician gave suggestion to reduce work hours ,it only affect government bodies not private bodies like us ,how i wish if affect both sectors.People complain that lesser work hours means more lazy ,that isnt true at all times .More like degrading quality life

Commandos and Dungeon Keeper drool.gif those are awesome games for its time (RIP Bullfrog Productions)

I have a significant amount of CD boxes at home, part of me wants to sell them but part of me likes that decoration on top of my gaming setup, something like "life's accomplishments".

I also had a similar phase where I would just prefer watching Youtube for games, rather than actually playing them...until I got a good deal for my current gaming rig and my hands getting itchy again. The passion I had before ignited again, albeit smaller than before. Casual playing now compared to the hours and hours of gaming I put then.

But as it stands, I'm still glad I game, something I would never throw away.

Check out the amount of games released on 2017 alone. We're flooded with so many games, we're basically spoiled at this stage. The 'magic' sensation is definitely gone for most people.

Back then I only have access to my brother's PC for a few hours per day and I would play the shit out of FF7 before he brings his PC back to his campus.

That same feeling is mostly gone now. Though I still enjoy playing games but I'm a lot more picky with the games that I play. I mostly play games that I can jump on and off. Meaning, I don't need to commit to finish the game (like Dota2, CSGO match making, etc.).

IMHO, there is no such thing as too many GOOD games to choose from, there is only "there are so many shitty games ,which is good?". This year game like cuphead brought back the PS1 style 2D scroller with 90's difficulty that now players complain is hard to play. there are just too many shitty games they title themselves as AAA and under deliver, the AAA graphics will only draw your attention for few hours, and then you sink in another few more hours, you feel the repetitive grind.

Look at black desert SEA, im sure there are tonnes of people for the first year, once they have grind and pay enough micro transaction it will slowly diminish in players number. Few years down the road , only left with egoistic whale that dump so much cash that they entertain themselves with in game pride that translate to nothing. Apologies, if i generalise the mass base on my experience.

I really think there are a lot of good single player games this year. Nioh, Nier, Wolfenstein etc...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing. The way company monetizes their game is vastly different for sure but there are still good companies out there that will just try to make a good game.

Not really. I usually kinda stop gaming few days or maybe weeks prior to new game/DLC/big patches release juat to watch some live streams or youtubes of incoming features etc.

Other than that, I still game a lot though I mostly only plays Total War these days. Not really have enough time for gaming though.

Has anyone experience this transition? Also I start to lose interest in new games, "they are always different but still same", there arent just a lot of games that give me the WOW element. From Hardcore->casual->non gamer.

I've already made my peace that I'm no longer a hardcore gamer. Although I have so many backlog games, I know I will never finish them in my lifetime. I have games from PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast and PC that I played halfway and never completed. Instead, I just look for videos on YouTube so that I can have closure, knowing how the game ends. That's mostly enough for me now. The only games I complete these days are fighting games, and occasionally games like Cuphead. Man I love that game.

Yup. i just watch competitive e-sports nowadays during weekend at night, in between epl. Just switch on twitch stream and cruise back on the couch.

Can't be arsed sitting through 40-1hr of gaming. Plus all this new lootbox release really make me feel thankful im not getting into hardcore gaming these days. I'd be so pissed off with paywall.

That being said, i do still enjoy getting the latest in some titles. Namely, fifa, fm manager, total war series. but yeh, new games are all the same.

Haha same here except with a twist

Been staying with dad/mum 4 long time and ever since i started self-employed,,,i never get the freedom 2 enjoy gaming as i used 2 like unlike working 4 others 4 more than 5 years ago

Its not like i no strength 2 play but rather when i play less than 2 hours already kena sound as though i sucking coke KNS😬😬👊👊

Bcuz of them i push myself 2 biznez outside the whole day till 12am like 6 days a week just 2 avoid their daily NAGGING😥😥😝😝the so-called flexibility as self-employed no more already WTF

The only time i can enjoy gaming is when they go 2 weeks holiday monthly and that is the only time i feel very free from the cage where i can game whole day till bcum tofu hahahaha rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

Back then in my MMORPG days even in the shower my mind were always occupied with what item/boss should I hunt for the day. I used to grind with my 2 other friends, we have common goals and really enjoyed each other's company.

Now so lazy to play, I would seriously go back if my friends are up to it but there's no more to do in that game. We tried new mmorpg but just couldn't get the old feels back.
