Penang floods: Large sinkhole appears in Tanjung Bungah.



GEORGE TOWN: A landslide-cum-sinkhole tore up a road in front of a row of newly-built luxury houses on a hillside in Tanjung Bungah early Sunday.

The landslide occurred at Persiaran Tanjung Bungah 3, and the land slipped down to the base of a towering condominium downhill.

The sheer retaining wall between the houses and the condominium tower gave way and tonnes of laterite earth pushed a steel wall outwards.

It is believed that the houses are unoccupied and no casualties were reported.

Penang has sought help from the armed forces after typhoon-like winds and rain lashed the state since Saturday evening, causing widespread floods, landslides and trees to topple.

In a video posted on his Facebook page Sunday, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he called Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to seek his help and thanked the Deputy Prime Minister for picking up the call although it was almost 3.30am.

"He promised to send the armed forces to save Penang," said Lim.

normally the road will be very tight , narrow to the hill because that is the most space you can get or cut...

now they instead only build a road. they cut further inside and build a house.

Bukit antarabangsa v2, soon penangites got opportunity to buy these luxury houses for cheaper price than low cost house d.

Once MOE declare unsafe area, wonder how the developer going to face. You can't built anything there anymore.

Suddenly Rm3mil house become RM0 value. Flipper, owner and developer sue here and there. Bank won't care and popcorn show.

those are not sinkhole, retaining wall failed cause by shoddy workmanship or inadequate support. the problem with malaysia, developer don't want to pay for soil improvement work and they never ever learnt their lesson. look at hong kong, they engaged specialist contractor for all hillside or slope landslide prevention.

So when bn rule penang guaranteed no flood? Dulu gerakan time never flood before?

what meteorology department. Its the retainer wall design and the drainage system. The retainer wall normally will anchor to the soil deep within, however, the the soil strength and compaction was not done properly, and there is lack of drainage from the top of the hill, water is going to seep into the group and weekend the soil.there will be more load and expansion occur. till the stage where the anchoring point of the retainer wall fail, it will collapse, if it doesn't the soil will wash out casing instability and buildings and roads on the top to collapse.

probably.. some retainer walls have drainage pipes to bleed out water seepage. for this case, its likely a water intrusion where no one anticipated. water enters the drainage system and flood the inner soil then weakens it from within.

doesn't look luxury also

Finally someone that actually knows what he's talking about and what exactly happened

who is that developer?

I know 2 projects that failed.. one is by mah sing in cheras at the slope just beneath venice hill. The bungalows were never billed and all investors got refunded.

2nd one is the cyberjaya villa residence by country heights which are almost finished but had big cracks from ground to top floor. All the houses are condemned and buyers got full refund plus interest.

most possible the property will be abandoned
