Hi guys.

My last post was on the iPhone 8 on 22 Sept 2017. Link here.

Today, I'm back with the unboxing of the much awaited iPhone X.

My usual caveat applies - sorry if the photos are crap. I’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking. Hope you enjoy it.

Note the box art is different for different models. The one on the left is the Silver unit and the one on the right is the Space Grey. Also, the box art bulges slightly to give it a "3D" feel.

The standard inlays. The quick start notes now provides basic introduction to the new swipe actions and button combos.

Various comparison shots of the Silver vs Space Grey. Note the chrome on the silver is different from the space grey.

"The Notch".

That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed it. Until the next time .....

camera bulge looks slightly bigger?
*
yes.

Nice!  On the back just have the word Iphone only right? Saw those UK and Euro units have other info below the Iphone wording. If I have the chance, will get the silver model.
*
Thanks. Yes, just the word "iPhone" on the back. These are Hong Kong units, just in case you'd like to know.

QUOTE(attw @ Nov 4 2017, 09:19 AM)
Nice one!

Thanks.

QUOTE(soitsuagain @ Nov 4 2017, 10:19 AM)
Hmmm would it even bulge out from the casing now?
*
No, most iPhone X casing would factor this in and wrap around the lens. Photos above of the casing are good examples.

Initial thoughts on the X after about one day of use.

Love the OLED screen.

Love the extra real estate on the larger screen.

Battery life seems better.

Larger and heftier (heavier) than what I've been used to (previous iPhones).

The loss of the Home button takes some getting used to.

The new gestures and swipes takes some getting used to.

I particularly dislike how we now close background apps.

No longer as thumb friendly as previously, due to the larger screen. Can't reach end to end of the screen with my thumb. And I have relatively large hands. Especially so since the new swipes requires stretching to the bottom left/right and top left/right.

Have not played with Face ID and new camera modes.

Will share more impressions later.

Day 2 and I'm really enjoying the new Portrait mode, particularly the "depth effect", or bokeh.

Taken with the X last night.

Do you like it without the home button? IMO, the home button is really the thing that makes the iphone so amazingly intuitive. In a sense that I don't have to know anything about it to learn how to use it. Like how there is no app drawer on an iPhone vs android.
*
Being an iPhone user since the original iPhone back in 2007, it's kinda hard for me personally to adjust to its absence. However, I'm sure over the next few days/weeks, I'll re-adjust and get used to it.

Thanks for the mini review. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Face ID and the Animoji biggrin.gif
*
The animoji is pretty fun, especially if you do crazy things with it. The facial tracking is impressive.

Thanks for sharing, good to read review from actual owners.

I think apple is going backwards with the new way of closing background apps. Btw do share more on day to day battery life when you have use it for a few more days, interested to know.
*
Thanks.

I agree. The new way to kill background apps is cumbersome. Day 2 and battery life has been pretty good.

I thought it will be more thumb friendly due to the bezelless design. I mean it’s harder to hold ?
*
It's bigger to hold in your palm, and my thumb won't reach end to end, diagonally. In other words, my thumb can't reach the top right corner and bottom left corner in one single sweep.

Day 5 experience. So far, Face ID has worked reasonably well. It's failed me a couple of times, in which case it prompts you to enter your passcode. I may try to reset my Face ID to see if that improves it. But all in all, it's been good. It works in total darkness, it works from a distance, and it works from reasonable angles/tilts.

Something I found interesting - notifications from WhatsApp or other apps appears on your lock screen, but doesn't show details or previews the message until your x is unlocked - which means there's a nice transition that looks like this ...

I also learnt something new, quite by accident actually. to kill apps running in the background, you can actually swipe up on the app you want to kill (just like the old way) instead of tapping the red "minus" sign on the top left of the app you want to kill.

Day 6. Started playing with the wireless charging. Works as advertised, even when encased with a silicon case.

Allows for fast charging option, with appropriate charger.

Have you gotten used to the UI, new gestures and lack of Home Button yet? I read online that some early adopters are still struggling.

The WhatsApp notifications look good - increased privacy smile.gif
*
I've gotten used to it now, and finding it comfortable to use. The only thing is that I'm also using an iPhone 8 at the same time, so shuttling between the two devices confuses me sometimes. lol.

QUOTE(phyckeryz @ Nov 9 2017, 11:57 AM)
why the camera not inside case like iphone se.. need used case to make flat.
*
yes, unfortunately it's a camera hardware vs form factor limitation.

as others have mentioned here, all iPhone X casing takes care of this. this is my casing ....

I believe the previously is talking about the non-Plus models where one-handed operation is easy. Now it's slightly more difficult but still easier than Plus models. Have to make use of the Reachability feature in accessibility.
*
yes, that's what I meant. I was comparing my previous non-plus iPhone 7/8 vs X. thanks for clarifying. appreciate it.

does the casing have the bubble effect at the back as well?
*
not on mine. looks fine to me.

QUOTE(buffa @ Nov 11 2017, 12:02 PM)
Woh, that wireless charger looks really nice. May I know the brand and price? notworthy.gif
*
It's a Baseus WXHSD Qi Wireless Charging Pad Dual Coil with Holder.

YouTube link here: https://youtu.be/v5stgBAt9fQ (sorry don't know how to embed)

Bought it for HK$220.

QUOTE(knwong @ Nov 11 2017, 09:51 PM)
Bro I suggest that you get a fast charger to charge

I just got myself Aukey PA-PY10 with USB-C Power Delivery that should charge iPhone X from 0 to 50% within 30 mins.

The supplied wall charger I already felt it is slow. I can imagine your wireless charger will be even slower
*
Yes, I have an Anker Power Port with Quick Charge.

I read that some people are selling off their X and reverting back to their old 7 or 8 after a couple of weeks as they seem to prefer the “old” Apple. Glad you’re not amongst them biggrin.gif
*
Yea, for me, it's about moving on. If I plan to continue using iPhone, might as well start the re-learning now. There's no turning back for me. lol.

Looks cool.

How long it takes to full charge your phone.
*
Thanks. To be honest, I don't know. Have never had to charge from 0%-100%. But based on daily usage, I find it decently fast enough for regular use. Sorry I can't be more precise.

But I should try it out one day. If I do, I'll let you know.

Since you have both iphone 8 and 10, which device do you use more? Kinda in a dilemma, whether go with the 10 or 8 plus. Unlocking phone in dark works well every time?
*
I use them for different purposes - work vs personal - so not apple to apple comparison. but if I had to choose, I would go for the X.

Unlocking in the dark works - but I find it works better when your face is further away from the screen. the problem is my tendency to look closer at the screen in the dark, naturally, hence that's counter productive to Face ID.
