PETALING JAYA: Giant brand owner GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd said it will cease operations of five Giant stores located in Sri Manjung, Sungai Petani, Shah Alam City Centre Mall, Sibu and Selayang Lama on Nov 5, 2017 at the expiration of leases at these premises.

According to its website, GCH Retail, which is also the owner of Cold Storage, Mercato and Jasons Food Hall, currently operates 54 Giant stores nationwide.

In a statement today, the group said it has reviewed its operations and the decision was made to improve efficiencies and productivity.

At the same time, the group said, it will relocate its Giant store in Bercham, Perak to an expanded premise, and will double the size of the store to provide more offerings and range of products for its customers.

“In addition, by the end of this year, GCH Retail will be relaunching a new exciting concept store by Cold Storage in KLCC.

“The group will continue to deploy its resources to raise the bar to create positive retail experiences for our customers. We look forward to serve our customers in all our stores located across the country,” it said in the statement.

GCH Retail did not respond to queries for additional information as at press time.

Improve efficiency my ass.

Giant Sri Manjung, Perak has recorded 4 years straight loss profit, so that's why they close shop.

I hate going to Giant. Less promo, expensive, even more expensive than Tesco, old layout design, no improvement like what Aeon and Tesco did.

Boring and feel like entering grave when I visit there.

Giant has a very strong presence in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
From this map, you can see there a total of 11 Giant hypermarket and supermarket in KK city alone with 1 outlet closed last year

Have never seen a 99speedmart.

Night markets here are jokes. Dirty. Very rarely cheaper than hypermarkets, unless it is rotten food to be consumed within one day.

Giant is bad, usually due to bad managers. Minimum 30 MYR for cards. Even Mydin does not do this.

Yes, and it's located underground, some first visitors don't even know there's a Giant down there. Anyway, the mall itself does not have big crowd to begin with, so understandable that Giant has even lesser customers.

However the Giant near the stadium has a good crowd most of the time.

Too many giants within the radius
Sec 7, 9 , 13, sacc

if u go to UK, there are a lot of mini stores on street corners. they are small and everywhere like kedai runcit but branded tesco/sainsburys etc with prices and selection like hypermarket. I expect this is what will happen in malaysian big cities as well. i dont like walking 2 hours looking for stuff in a big hypermarket 20mins away from my house.

with all the new service like online grocery on 11street, seems like a lot of the hypermarket need to be more competitive to survive. People now can easily compare while at the shop, and I realize a lot of their things are overpriced (even though you think its cheap). Only certain promotional/sale item is worth buying.

"The current closing down of Giant and Aeon Big has nothing to do with disruptive technology as total online sales in Malaysia is hardly 5%.

And online sales of groceries / toiletries / fresh and sundries (which is 80% of a hypermarket business) is hardly 0.5 % in Malaysia

Also note the closing of the Giant branches are not in key urban areas like Klang Valley.

This actually shows rural purchasing power is gone down drastically
Business is down by 4.8% in hypermarkets which caters to middle and low income population, simply because purchasing power for basics necessities is down."
