I can think of two:

1. they join because can get loans with attractive rate
2. dividens when putting money in koperasi

koperasi means to provide assistance to its members. assistance can be in the form of loans, or discount in getting certains goods or facilities.
to be a member of koperasi, you need to buy koperasi shares.
if the koperasi make money, you as a shareholders will get some dividends or profits.

There are plenty in Malaysia. Anything that includes a group of peole with a common interest can be a koperasi. Popular ones include:

- Kowaja (Koperasi Wawasan Pekerja-Pekerja)
- Kojadi (Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia)
- Koswip (Koperasi Koswip Malaysia)
- KOBENA (Koperasi Belia Nasional)
- Kowamas (Koperasi Wawasan Malaysia)
- Koperasi Tentera
And dozens more.

These koperasi are all regulated by the Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (SKM). They have a giant list of koperasi that are all registered under them. All koperasi must register with SKM by law.

1. In most cases, yes they can. But the interest rates for non-members/new members will be higher than long time members. If you want to enjoy the lower rates, usually you still need to have been a member for a certain amount of time (can range from months to years) before you can apply the loan as a koperasi member.

2. No, anyone can join usually, even private sector employees. You just need to pay an annual membership fee and buy some of their shares (if any)

Credit Unions are big in America. They tend to give better loan and deposit rates to their members than banks.

I don't really know of very many cooperatives in the JB area sweat.gif Most of the ones I've mentioned are located in KL. But there are a few that I found that might be useful.

Koperasi JESS
http://www.koperasijess.com/pinjaman.html

Koperasi JCORP
http://www.kopjcorp.com.my/hubungi-kami-39.aspx

KOWAMAS
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&...b78Oi1aj-kXRs7G

Koperasi Permai Bersatu Johor Bahru
https://www.facebook.com/KOPERMAI/

I'm not too sure about Koperasi Bank Persatuan. But I hear there is a fairly high entry price to buy their min no of shares. (Around RM500)
