Based on the 1st post, I think the question is more like... what makes a REAL fan rather than a glory hunter? If we're looking for HARDCORE fans then it's different answer already, like sell car to fly to the stadium every year, sacrificing makan/minum to collect expensive merchandise, etc...

Being a real fan is quite simple - being aware of your team, know who's who, latest results, etc. You don't have to be rich, or join clubs, or buy their shirts, etc. Do whatever it is within your limits, then you're good.

A glory hunter, well, only knows when they've won a major trophy and go singing "WE'RE THE CHAMPS" but don't even know who are the players.

Eh eh a bit off topic but just to clarify yah... since there are so many occurences in the thread - "fans" refer to many people. As in, "we are fans of Liverpool" or "they are Chelsea fans". Wrong to say "I'm a fans of Man Utd". Heh heh... sorry to offend anybody but we gotta learn to argue correctly!
