QUOTE(madmoz @ Jan 22 2008, 12:42 AM)
hey, i forgot to save a few % for duke's friend doh.gif
*
I'll make a note of that tongue.gif

QUOTE(clayclws @ Jan 22 2008, 01:17 AM)
I know for sure my dad had a large influence on what I like. Music, movies, etc. Man Utd was his love, and it flowed in my veins as well as my elder bro's. But his love for England didn't stick with any of us.  laugh.gif  So, real fans, how did you people get to love your clubs so much anyway? Who started it all? I know Cantona did for many MU fans (his karate kick was the best laugh I had at that time).

Why is it so much harder to love a national team? Cause there's not much influence?
You aren't getting it my friend. We don't support the club because of it's players or it's managers. We support the club because of the club. We love it's history, traditions and culture. I'm going to stop here because I don't think you understand where I'm coming from. We may live thousands of miles away but we feel a strong connection with the club. Just because someone hasn't been there, doesn't mean they can't be fans (I've been there btw). I know this because I see how emotional people like Jonno, JonC, Monstar, etc get when watching games. Supporting the club however transcends beyond what you see on the pitch. Events like Hillborough, Heysel, even Michael Shields being incarcerated for a crime he did not commit, draw emotional responses. If you don't feel the same then nothing I can say will make you understand.

National team? I don't have any reason to.

QUOTE(madmoz @ Jan 22 2008, 01:21 AM)
Clayclws... you are missing the point methinks. It is never about the players but more about the 'club'. How do we associate ourself with a foreign nation? I.e. we love liverpool as we would like to believe the supporters stick together and the club represents our collective hearts (beh, damn yanks messing up everything) but what of England? What does England mean to me? Nothing much.
My sentiments exactly.

QUOTE(god_of_cookery @ Jan 22 2008, 02:32 AM)
heh another retarded fans clashing against each other??? nice scenario  biggrin.gif
*
As opposed to your retarded comment.

QUOTE(god_of_cookery @ Jan 22 2008, 02:50 AM)
me..? i like one actually.. but i am not a real fan. i just watch football for fun. that's only a game to me..
Who am i? I am a man that like to learn
My contribution? None. i don't claim this as real...
No man i am not mocking anybody here. but got one here really irritated me a lot  shakehead.gif
*
So why bother getting involved in this conversation when you clearly aren't a real fan? You just had to add your 2 cents didn't you?

The likes of shah_ho_nam, they're in way over their head here hence you see all the throwing in about university education, family status and all that crap. He basically knows crap about what he is speaking about and already been exposed as one who will not back his team thru and thru.
Football is essentially a blue collared sport and most avid fans are from blue-collared backgrounds. Maybe that's why someone with a PHD coming from a privileged background doesn't understand it.

QUOTE(verx @ Jan 22 2008, 12:23 PM)
I think that's a very stereotypical statement. You could argue that since majority of the population are from blue-collared backgrounds, that they would make up the majority of football fans.
*
I wrote that in response to something else.

In any case, someone that is less privileged and saves up to follow his beloved team everywhere including Europe stands out more than someone with wads of money. It may be stereotypical but while you can doubt the passion and commitment of someone with heaps of money, you certainly can't with say a cab driver who blows his life savings on say going to Istanbul or Athens.

QUOTE(Haunkiem @ Jan 22 2008, 09:00 PM)
HAHAHAHHAHA .

Are you serious ?

then you better get a large bucket of blue paint and throw it in any cafe/bistro that shows EPL games coz most of fans nowadays are yuppie pondans.

Even in UK the old working class fans are being marginalised , they are trying to steal the game away from them to the new age pondans.

Are you sure you are not a yuppe fan ?

If you are so serious why dont you move to Liverpool and see what a shit place it is , same withmost of the UK .
*
I've been and yes, it's not the best of places to live. I stated earlier that what I typed was in response to a previous post so laugh outta your ass will ya? I don't expect you to do so now given it's pages back, but check on air_mood's argument with shah to get a better idea of what i said that.

I think it's ok to have a go at your players or manager every now and then especially if they're crap. Heck, you have a go at your friend if he's doing something wrong right? Doesn't mean you don't still love him as your friend. Footballers are professionals and heckling is an occupational hazard. You really think he's going to go home and cry if you scold and shout at him?

QUOTE(munky @ Jan 29 2008, 11:32 PM)
No offence but you really believe liverpool reserves are better than Everton ?
They probably were when Shankly was manager lol. Definitely not now!

QUOTE(Hevrn @ Jan 30 2008, 12:20 PM)
I'd think it'd be better if you stated the source of the quote (Shankly?) to avoid confusion. I for one rate Everton. Not a club with lots of money but top six material year in year out. If they pip Liverpool to forth spot come end of the season, I wouldn't be a bit suprised
Well they did pip us in 2005 when they 'qualified' for the Champions League.

I wonder how will he react if I put "Liverpool are another Leeds United" in my sig....

It will only hurt if it's true. Why? Is what Vreis said true? Truth be told, football rivalries spark confrontation. Live with it. It doesn't have to be true, it doesn't have to be logical. Being a fan is mostly about emotion.

QUOTE(Haunkiem @ Feb 8 2008, 06:29 AM)
fair enough , it may soon be academic in a bad way -

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/627842
But even so , all local guys like you who talks about tradition , history etc - what about the history of Malaysia National team .

Do you even know anything about the glory days of the 70s and early 80s ?

Mokhthar , James Wong , Shukor , Wong Chong Wah , Yip Chee Keong , Jamal Nasir , Bakri , Arumugam.

All real local fans should start here then the natural progression is to the UK scene.
*
Having been born in the mid 70's, I am well aware of our glory days. Well my dad was a football fan and even as a wee little lad, I'd go to padang Timur to watch him play in the amateur league. I was well proud of our team back then and even as I'm moaning and complaining now, it's more out of frustration than hate. I'm frustrated that our football has degenerated to what it is now.

QUOTE(Haunkiem @ Feb 8 2008, 04:54 PM)
OK , good , of course everyone is in agreement  about the shiet state of local football , I have no sympathy.

But do you feel an affinity with the guys of the glory days ?  you were alive then  , you must have realised the fevour our national team created , how come you don't feel a bond with the likes of the Wongs , mokhthar etc ?

I feel closer to these than I do any EPL player I can tell you that . It legitimies one's affinity for the game , a natural progression not some pondan who jumped on the bandwagon when Paul masefields uglymug appeares on TV.
*
Maybe it's because it was such a long time ago. I like many others have short term memory. I did weep when Mokhtar passed away. He epitomised everything that was good in the Malaysian game. Back then though, my sense of national pride was much stronger, not like it is today. Sports aside, it has to do with the political environment and all. I just don't feel a strong affinity with my nation anymore.

then surely you must feel a sense of pride about guys like James Wong and Chong Wah ? they shocked the world man , even England reculars respected them .
*
Of course I feel a sense of pride, but I'm looking at the bigger picture here and not just as individuals. The team of old represents all that is missing from our nation at the moment. Okay, I'll limit my scope to football for now. Those days, the team played with pride and passion, they were playing as Malaysians, not Chinese, Malay or Indians. We were well and truly 'muhibbah' which even as I say it, warms the heart.

this is quite a nonsense of finding out everything abt the club before liking it or supporting it .. its like u do all ur research on the gal and know everything before falling for her ... its like ... whats there to discover anymore liaw lol ..
*
You'll come to realise that a good majority of fans don't bother to 'discover' more.

All I know is this; if the 'glamour pondan' remark was aimed at me, i'd like to meet him in person to see who the 'pondan' is. Be a man and say it to my face. If not then well, not my argument really.

QUOTE(kobe8byrant @ Feb 10 2008, 12:17 PM)
Do you seriously get that F-er's argument with 'natural progression'? Because I don't. Why would I progress to a foreign league if the current local league were good and entertaining enough? I'd only bypass it because it's shite. And he was referring to all EPL fans when with the 'glamour pondan' remark, no?
*
I don't agree with progression either. I don't think this is taekwando or whatever where you need to earn different coloured belts sequentially. I used to follow the local league because we were decent back then, and also because coverage of world football was limited. I have since stopped following local football for a variety of reasons; politics, corruption, racial divide, etc. Who can support a league, team or whatever that doesn't have the best interest of it's fans at heart? The powers that be have made a mockery of football in this country and we deserve to be where we are at. Only time will tell when they have had enough of people laughing at us. What strategy did they adopt then? They came out with ads poking fun at people who follow football overseas and have denounced local football. Childish isn't it? Make fun of those who don't agree with us. rolleyes.gif It's the same approach they used to promote patriotism; asking everyone to put up our national flag at their homes. So waving the flag will miraculously help me forget every reason I have to be so unpatriotic? As usual, the problems are never addressed.

I don't see why someone cannot follow more than 1 league at a time. Most of us are football fans. I mean if we don't like football, why choose to support a football team. Yes, there are those who have bought into the brand and don't even watch the game but support a particular club. I am of the opinion however that one can only really support one club. I don't see why being a fan from abroad makes us any less of a fan, though I agree a big proportion aren't all that serious. A small minority however are probably on par and in some cases more of a fan. As it is, clubs are complaining about how the atmosphere are stadiums are deteriorating, reflecting that fans in general are becoming less and less involved. I honestly have seen more singing and chanting during a few MyRAWK viewings than at Anfield. Ok, so singing and chanting may not really reflect that we're fans but what does then?

You are a bitter one aren't you? They have a name for people who think they are the one true superior being amongst a sea of inferiority = wanker/jackass/retard. Oh wait, there is more than one world. What astounds me is how you keep coming back to these threads though you seem to think that everyone here is beneath you. Are you some middle aged bitter man that can't hold his own against people his age and comes here to pick on little kids to make himself feel bigger?

Look who's talking .

I can say the same to you . Those who are scared of other who disagree with them are wanker/jackass/retard.

what's so clever about that ? lan
*
The difference is that you disagree for the sake of disagreeing. If I were afraid to disagree, I wouldn't have taken a dig at you now would I?

Is it some coincidence that even on forums such as the "real world issues" one, people think you are a prick? A string of coincidences can only indicate one thing. Care to take a stab at what?

You are entitled as deluded as you may be. How credible your claim is another matter all together. There is however some evidence that you do justice to the term. Is it a coincidence though that everyone seems to think you're a prick? Well maybe not your legion of admirers in the UK. Take your head out of your ass, listen to what people are saying and perhaps the world will look a little different.

Put it this way. No one here enjoys having a conversation with you because you can't be civil. For some reason you think everyone is beneath you. You talk down to people. Either mellow out or bugger off.

Anfield's infamous, "BADGEMAN"!

QUOTE
That is his crime fighting alter ego! By day he is Pete Sampora, leisure club manager, booking people into yoga classes and cleaning treadmills. At night he transforms into "Badgeman!" Following the reds around the country in his ridiculous costume and singing songs!

As like any other discussion thread, it's longevity depends on your ability to put forth a decent argument backed by either facts, or at least some reasoning. How often to you see 'mortal enemies' like myself, kobe, airmood, jonno, madmoz, etc sharing the same thoughts and agreeing on the same subjects? The answer? Seldom. We do however have one thing in common. We back what we say up with reasoning. If we can keep doing that, I see no reason for a thread to be shut just because of one instigator.
