Mercedes with that big brain strategy masterclass for HAM, however it wasn't unseen before (cue Hungary 2019).

Kept thinking last night what would happen if RBR counter by pitting VER too probably 1-2 laps after HAM's 2nd stop? Then the tyres difference btwn HAM and VER would have been negated, however BOT would lead the race. Wondeing at this situation how would Merc utilise BOT's leading position to outplay VER?

If BOT leads the race, Merc kept him out too long he would lose tyre wear, allowing VER and HAM to eventually pass?

Also, on HAM's 2nd stop did they fit him with worn tyres? Those mediums didn't look shiny. I gotta watch replay.

On post race interview SLH has told Jenson that the team ensure they have 2 sets of new medium tyres for the race.  Which mean they already have 2 stops in their mind and it is only the execution part on when and what to do if he lose the lead or not losing the lead on turn 1.

What is pretty clear for this Spanish GP is that the Redbull seems to be well matched or even slightly faster on the soft tyres.  But on the medium (preferred race tyre), the Merc AMG has upper hand.  That is why Sir Lewis can catch up with some gap after 1st pits and keep his car behind for many laps only to find that the passing is very difficult because Redbull is fast on 3rd sector => gap enlarge before the long straight at start-finish line.

So, if Merc AMG is faster on medium or the race tyres, then RB has little chance to win unless they pull out a good pit strategy.  And Merc is better with strategy so no chance for Max.

VB's race pace is curiously slower and his race was a bit compromised by SLH race.  For that I think he purposely ignore the team's order to let SLH pass for a short moment and made life difficult for that particular pass.  And in the process delayed SLH by at least 0.5-1.0 sec.

All in all, Merc deserved the win.  RB has to play second fiddle this time wink.gif

Woah seconded this. Good point. Gap was ~0.3s into T1 of a lap, grows back to 1.0s around T10, then 1.08s-1.1s as both exited final corner back into start/finish straight.

That won't work because LH already undercut MV and with only 1-2 laps tire age difference,  won't be enough to have significant pace advantage for MV. I think their only outside chance was to pit MV again around 20 laps before the end with new softs si he could have about 1sec per lap tire advantage to catch back.

Important to have 2 drivers running at the front eh? Race was basically 1 vs 2. Well 20 laps for VER to pass HAM might be a tough call as well. "Catching up is one thing, passing is another" really rings true this round.

Ya man, what a great race to watch.

Seeing the 2 Honda boys kena tapao is so satisfying 👍👍

MV was really playing too much of dirty moves. Damn him. Hope his karma got back yo him with a DNF in next race !

DNF takes away the battle and kills the competition.
Best is let the drivers duke it out on track without one causing a crash on another, like this Brazillian GP.
