I have just finished operating bro Shumaky's 3rol console, here are a few pictures of the "cleaning old and putting fresh thermal paste" process.

Before cleaning,

^ The trick here is to use a card (namecard or your IC card tongue.gif ) to scrap off those big junk of thermal compound, until only the sticky blurry thin thermal are left on the chip. After that, put 1 drop of arctic thermal remover 1 onto the chip and leave it for 10 secs, clean it using a cotton bud. Do not use a cloth to wipe it as you might scratch the surface of the chip or the heatsink, just use a q-tip will do fine. There might be some thermal sticking onto the small legs of the chips next to the GPU, just use a q-tips and the thermal remover, it will come out eventually.

After you are finally satisfied in cleaning it, the heatsink and chip should look as clean and shiny as

^ checkout the reflections of the q-tip on the chip brows.gif
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now its time to put on fresh thermal paste, just squeeze out a tiny "rice grain" size onto the tip of your q-tips (its easier to apply the thermal paste if its on the TIP of the q-tip). Never use extra thermal paste once you have used that "rice grain" size amount of thermal, cause more than that, that means you are putting TOO MUCH thermal paste on it!! (stares at xxboxx laugh.gif )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finally after applying the thermal compound, it should look like this

After that just follow on the Lawdawg or RBJTech's tutorial and you should get yourself a working revived zombie xbox 360.

Hey no problem man. Its all for the 360 community anyway.. its not like i am earning a big profit from doing this but then the feeling of reviving something presumed to be dead is just ... satisfying biggrin.gif

Btw, stress testing your console with Gears of War..

At point of post, it has lasted for 30 mins.

@Bro silencer - Please add a 3rol console - Error 0102 - Fixed by me, virgil.

MY SECOND 360 GOT 3ROD JUST NOW WHEN I TURNED IT ON!!!!!!!
damn it....two 360s in a row....really bad luck...
what should i do? its still under warranty..
should i bring it back to singapore or just do the x-clamp method?
so damn pissed.... vmad.gif  vmad.gif  vmad.gif  vmad.gif
didn't even get to play the new maps i've downloaded..
*
If you have two then did you tried to x-clamp the 1st console which got 3rod? Or the 1st console you exchange it under warranty. If your console is still under warranty, i suggest you bring it to singapore to exchange it for a refurbished one. Just bring it back to M$, they have already troubled us enough with those stupid design flaws and we must not let them escape from it...! Bring it back and give them a nice scolding!! vmad.gif

If your console is still under the warranty period, then just go ahead and exercise the warranty, the warranty is actually part of the price that you bought the 360 with anyway.... but then you will have to face the hassle of going over to SG. No point voiding the warranty by removing the x-clamps because this method has not been really proved to be the "real" solution of 3rol.

In Xbox-scene there are some case of xclamp survivor consoles go 3ROD again, so its better to warranty first.

When out of warranty only xclamp.
*
Ok! The record showed only 1 case where the console got 3rol again after removing the x-clamps... So far for those who have gotten 3rol after they removed the x-clamps, their problems have been rectified by the master, RBJTech or Lawdawg (founder of the 2 x-clamps methods).

Most of them was because of the lack of experience in doing the operation so they ended up getting back the 3rol.. thats y through the advice given by the "Masters", they have the problems rectified and manage to remove the 3rol again!

The shop that I usually buy from has altogether 26 units of XBOX 360  with the 3ROD problems, all 26 of them lying on the floor in ICU corner. The boss also pening. I also pity him lah. It is costly to send the console back to the supplier in HK since it's freaking heavy. I guess XBOX 360 is the least profitable console of all, plague with tons of problems. They're much happier selling Wii and PS3 instead. Hahaha.
*
Hm..26 3ROL consoles... does he wanna fix them all? If he really wants to get rid of them rather than sending it back to HK i can always give him a helping hand by fixing all of it (for a small fee of course). However, he will still have to send it over to PJ so i think it would be kind of a hassle eh...

@xxboxx - The 1st symptom you mentioned above is actually because your operation has a bit of flaw in it. If you have put the minimum amount of thermal paste, the fan would not act that way. The fan blowing loud means that the heat is not transmitting efficiently to the heatsinks.

I have operated a lot of 3rod consoles and other than those who got E74 error, their clamps are slightly bent more into the centre. And there is the E74 problem which is the big question now? What is the exact cause of it.. anybody wanna enlighten me on it?

Special Live update for Bro Silencer: Short test done. Everything looks fine. Will start the stress test soon.

Erm.. if you wanna have the console be put vertically i can actually do some modifications to the metal casing holding the mobo so that the screws head can sink into the metal casing thus if you put it vertically, the screws head will lean on to the metal casing instead of inside it (which might cause downforce on the mobo).
