For your information, for saving space (eg. to send to a friend through Internet), the format to use should be {MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 AAC, MPEG-4 container}. Very high quality encoders are available for free: x264 and neroaacenc.
To me, there is no advantages of using RealVideo. It's 1) proprietary, no open standard, the only encoder/decoder comes from Real. (Real Alternative is "transplanting the entire engine from Real") 2) subjective quality vs bitrate is worse than AVC. 3) CPU usage when playing is higher than AVC. Now, is it worth to make a reencode? If the video quality is poor, I think it's not worth it. There are only some specific situation I think it is enough to justify reencoding 1) The original format is MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2), achieving satisfactory quality at very high bitrate. (You're to reduce the bitrate significantly while reducing the subjective quality very slightly) 2) The original is encoded at too high bitrate, compared to its subjective quality. (You're to reencode at the bitrate suitable for that kind of quality) 3) You are desperate to squeeze out even 5% reduction in bytes to send through Internet. But in this case, you better have a high quality source. As for the method to perform, I personally use several tools together. Generally idea is encoding video and audio separately, then mux together later. Making good quality small file size requires some insights on how videos work. There are issues with aspect ratio, interlacing, variable framerate, noise filtering, etc. If you know nothing about how the related things work, there are frontends like SUPER to make a predetermined sequence. Sometimes, it's quite far from ideal. Sometimes you're ending up with a poor quality output. To achieve desired quality with lowest bitrate possible, you really need to understand the inner workings, examine what your source video is made up of, decide what to do with it. A different source (eg. with telecine or progressive) requires different method of processing. |
