My amp wasn't working so I got a quote on it. I believe he said the speaker was broken and the ports are all rusty. Hence, the cost will be RM250. I think I bought the amp about RM450 more than a decade ago. It's pretty good amp, everything worked fine outside the gain/clean on and off button. I don't know if it's a good idea to get it repaired for that much. Any ideas? I'm surprised it's that much tbh. Would I be able to get a better new amp for that amount?

Yeah I was thinking the same. 250 for an amp over a decade old more than half the price of the original costs seems like a stupid idea. But I really get attached to my devices and was hoping maybe if there was a place that would fix it for cheaper I'd be interested to know. If it was 150 bucks I'd be willing to pay.

I have had good experiences with Impact Zone Engineering in USJ for fixing my faulty amplifiers at a reasonable price; website: www.audioservices.com.my

Please PM me which shop/business that you sent your amplifier to be diagnosed/fixed.

i second impact zone...
but seeing as ur speaker is broken...shouldnt expect below rm200 either.

i probably would say either get it repaired, or go buy a cheap amp like the marshall mg10...or a kustom tube 12 which there is one used one in garage sales here.

Yeah I spoke to the guy, said he could do it for 150 but it will be cheap speakers. Not sure how that will sound, I'll check out guitar store what they have for that price when I go collect my amp.

Nowadays a big part of any repair job is the labour / service cost ... for Rm150 I am not sure how 'cheap' will the replacement speaker be. I would allow at least RM100 for his/her effort and expertise ....

Even for RM250 double check what can you get for that amount ? If it's better than go ahead .. junk this otherwise it still make economic sense unless you are fxxthy rich .. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Just buy a new amp. Furthermore, this is not a highly sought after/limited edition amp.

Going from gain/clean button not functioning, to broken speaker is a pretty big leap, don't you think?

Just out of curiosity, was it properly diagnosed and confirmed by a qualified technician that the speaker was faulty to begin with?

If you do decide to replace the stock speaker with a Celestion Super 8 for instance, it would likely enhance the amp's sound, so consider it an upgrade; the magnet/coil in the stock speaker is visibly smaller compared to Celestions. I wouldn't settle for a cheap replacement speaker if you plan to continue using the amp - defeats the purpose of getting it fixed; assuming that the speaker needs to be replaced.

The reason I took it there is because there was no sound all of a sudden. I did find it strange that they said all the switches needed to be changed given that everything works absolutely fine outside of the gain/clean.

It was diagnosed properly I believe. When I sent it there the technician was off, they checked it the next day and when I wanted to pick it up the day after, it was still in the technician's place so I had to wait. I think that's good enough to go on.

True about the speaker, I'll inquire more about the specifics regarding that and get a quote on the Celestion.

Btw, what ever happened to us jamming? Did you find a singer?

When you found it odd that they said all the switches needed changing, and yet everything else worked fine, then it sounds like it wasn't diagnosed properly. I wouldn't rely on what they said - a second opinion may be in order. Speakers don't break so easily unless you (a) bump the amp with considerable force and break the coil/magnet, or (b) damage it with water or a corrosive liquid, or (c ) play at very loud volumes for the cone to tear up, or (d) do something equally silly/negligent. Even with a torn cone, the amp would continue to produce sound. Likely a problem on the PCB or the transformer than the speaker; have you tried replacing the fuse on your amp?

I recall Instraco (on Jalan Pasar) stocks Celestions.

Bandmates weren't enthusiastic about playing those songs; needed a singer who'd be comfortable with our existing setlist/selections to handle higher registers.

About the switches, they said it was all rusted and such but still made no sense. As for the scenarios, not of those apply not even the playing loudly although I did lend it to a friend maybe a couple of months prior. One thing I did notice is that when I turned off the amp, it had this pop sound (I think when turning on too), sometimes it was louder than usual. Had my friend used it loudly for a gig, would it have lasted two months before going out? It was an old amp tho, over a decade old but I haven't used it for the last 5 years probably until I got my guitar restrung. Only play it for recreation at best so getting a new amp seems redundant as well as spending 200+ on it.

Good luck finding the singer, would be cool to hear someone sing at those pitch. I've been more of a Pearl Jam/2000s alt guy than Soundgarden anyway. Was looking forward to jamming Daughter though, hardly meet people willing to drop it to C let alone that tuning XD

I've heard they are kinda more pricey than other places but they are near and lugging that thing around is a pain, it's not exactly small.

Since this thread is still on the first page, a little update.

Went to pick up my amp, they said there was a 30 bucks checking fee which the other person said there wasn't went I first sent it in. I don't even recall having a checking fee when I asked them to check my guitar internally.

Checked with the guy who was suggested in this thread, there is no checking fee at his outlet. He told me over WhatsApp without inquiry.

Needless to say, I won't be going to Guitar Store ever again.
