iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can't wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price - we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones

Just read that news few hours ago too..

Not sure if that is a good or bad thing as I am getting a new mac by x'mas..

Bad news to people waiting for leopard while good news for people waiting for iPhone.

And I was hoping to have a Leopard-running MacBook Pro ordered and ready for me in August.

Pretty glad that it didn't came early...
It'll really make recent buyer of Mac frustrated (i know i will, bought it on February, few months later newer OS come out)

Gotta spend few hundred if we were to upgrade it

lol, what's the big fuss. just grab whatever mac u want if you need it. I don't see much actual improvement from tiger to leopard that you must have it. Most of it are add-on that can be done with apps. Even if it's out on this year, i'll probably wait for 10.5.2 before upgrading my workstation.

Agree completely with Wei. Apple operating system upgrades are very much incremental. I doubt very many people make a buying decision based on the release of the new point upgrade to OS X.

The same cannot be said for Windows. My Vaio SZ18GP shipped with XP Pro. I've since upgraded it to Vista using a store-bought OEM copy. It is no easy task to get the drivers updated to Vista for the various hardware components. Buying a Vaio with Vista preinstalled would be a much easier task.

Compare however with Apple OS upgrades; insert DVD, choose password and with minimal fuss : you're upgraded.

Actually, many people particularly new Mac users are (were?) waiting for the latest Leopard release before buying a Mac. Not sure what they'll decide now...

lol... i don't like to repeat myself.

"By the time you waited for leopard, then Apple will/might announce Mac revision that's coming next few months. Wait again? Ok, fine, faster machine, why not right? Then you waited, by the time the new machine coming, there's a new apps or new version of OS announced. Wait again? (and this will never end)"

I was holding out for Leopard in hopes that Apple would release some hardware changes to their current line of product immediately preceding the OS' release. MacRumors' Buying Guide suggests that the Mac Mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro are all in line for updates coming soon. I'm just hoping that Apple throws LED-backlit displays into the MacBook Pro along with some other minor hardware revisions so I have an excuse to purchase soon.

On the bright side, this extra time that Apple has afforded itself means less problems come release day.

Me too, I had purposely held back my Macbook Pro purchase in hopes of hardware spec changes with the upcoming Leopard, as well having it preloaded. Looks like now I have to get it after October.
Any chance, any of you all would have any idea what Apple might charge to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard?

Apple OS pricing has always been at around USD 100 (Do the math). Unless you've bought a Mac 3 months prior to the OS release (in which case, the upgrade is free) you won't get significant discounts from Apple. You can ignore those coupons in the retail box too, they turn out to be useless.

For those of you new to the Mac, things were not always this way. Prior to System 7, OS upgrades were FREE.

Hmm so we people that buy things at the PC Fair are out of luck edy. And I don't think my dad will pay 100USD just for OS Upgrade. For the first time, Apple disappoint me.

puh-leeazzz.....!!! shakehead.gif shakehead.gif

your dad's gonna get you an imac, and you wanna complain about Apple disappointing you for just a 4-month delay for a more sturdly-built Leopard...? doh.gif doh.gif

Ask yourself again, who's gonna be paying for your iMac and possibly a Leopard upgrade. Be content with what you're gonna get and stop whining.... and if you think that apple products are expensive and not affordable, just get a PC and post your frustrations elsewhere...

and mind you, I've been observing your posts here in AppleByte, and most of them aren't even contributive.

hehehe... i mean, we're here to find more ways to better utilise our Macs, not really to complain about Apple being late.

with any technology company, by the time you wait for new products, they've already moved on to designing the next thing. what matters is the product that's being sold now meets your needs, and you can afford it.

edited, subsituted the word instead of the corporate logo.

Kids. I suggest you brush up on your English first so people will take you seriously.

But really - what can you expect out of Apple at this point in time? The iPhone is perhaps the most anticipated gadget of this year and development on it should very well take precedence over the release of a new operating system. Go buy a new Mac and upgrade to Leopard when you feel like it whilst everyone in North America toys around with their iPhones.

I'm also one of the 'waiting people', waiting to switch to the Mac OS once it's out. Already am itching for it but considering the fact that I'm unable to get my hands on the latest Command & Conquer game, October sounds fine with me.

By the way, a little off topic: Anyone knows whether a Mac can read all the files on a DVD/CD that I burnt on Windows? Files like images, movies, mp3?

I'm waiting. Don't mind at all. You can argue that we will alway get better stuffs by waiting, but I'm only waiting for Leopard to release. By then maybe they'll chip in 20inch iMacc with mainstream quad cores. haha biggrin.gif
