Disclaimer, I've posted this at https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4691774 too.

To answer your questions, no, the community is not dead. But instead diversified into different technology user group, I don't have the list around but you'll find them on meetup.com or Facebook easily.

Meetup are very regular, meetup is held every month for each group.
Just to name a few.
KL Ruby Brigade https://www.facebook.com/groups/klxrb
KL JS https://www.facebook.com/groups/kualalumpurjs
Python Malaysia https://www.facebook.com/groups/219490895250220

DevOps Malaysia https://www.facebook.com/groups/devopsmalaysia
Rust Lang Malaysia https://www.facebook.com/groups/1876280775927500
We also celebrate a few like Open Data Day.
Also there's a talk to revive BarCamp and GeekCamp.

Ruby and Python also been organising a local conference every year too

https://pycon.my

Organisation wise, there's a few that involves community engagement
Sinar Project for Civic Tech (https://sinarproject.org)
EngineersMY for community planning and learning (https://engineers.my), join the Slack channel if you want to learn more.
EngineersMY is also been archiving some of the meetup presentation

For security, HiTB (Hack in the Box) started in Malaysia but unfortunately they left Malaysia a few years back.

Disclaimer, I'm one the person behind Golang Malaysia, EngineersMY and DevKami. Was previously active in Python Malaysia, Sinar Project and participated foss.my 09.

In short, the local tech scene is very active.

If anyone of you guys are interested in picking up hosting MYOSS meetup, we're glad to give you guidance.

TLDR, the closest you can find to a LUG is DevOps Meetup.
