PSA from me: The only way to get unlocked iPhones is to pay full retail price only at official Apple Online/Retail Store. All unlocked iPhones can be used anywhere in the world, regardless of number of supported bands.

Also, to people who are buying from Australia, China, or Hong Kong: Be warned that the model number for sale in Malaysia (A1897/A1905) is different from the iPhones sold there. Same goes for Japan or US iPhones too (unless you go with the AT&T or T-Mobile version).

However, be advised that Malaysian AASPs may not accept warranty claims for models sold overseas. Only iPhones with model numbers sold domestically are guaranteed support by local AASPs.

For more info, checkout this spreadsheet.

^ A1864/A1863 (CDMA) [Sold in AU/US]: May not be warranted locally. Qualcomm modem, can be used on CDMA carriers in US like Verizon or Sprint. Can support FeliCa so you can use Japanese e-money cards like Suica with Apple Pay.

` A1864/A1863 (GSM) [Sold in HK/ZH]: May not be warranted locally. Intel modem, can't be used on CDMA carriers at all. Can support FeliCa so you can use Japanese e-money cards like Suica with Apple Pay.

* A1897/A1905 [Sold in MY/SG/WW]: Fully warranted by local AASPs. Intel modem, can't be used on CDMA carriers at all. Can support FeliCa so you can use Japanese e-money cards like Suica with Apple Pay. iPhones sold in some Middle Eastern countries do not support FaceTime Audio & Video.

º A1898/A1906 [Sold only in JP]: May not be warranted locally. Qualcomm modem, can be used with CDMA carriers in Japan like Softbank or au. Can support FeliCa so you can use Japanese e-money cards like Suica with Apple Pay. iPhones sold in Japan cannot have the camera shutter sound disabled, even in silent mode.

[[Updated for new info: all new iPhones globally support FeliCa]]

unfortunately true, but a bit irrelevant since Malaysia don't even have tri-band CA yet. Our LTE speeds max out well below 500 Mbps.

...includes better signal reliability when you are further from a cell tower or inside a building...

if I'm not mistaken, this part doesn't rely fully on Gigabit LTE. it relies on whether the carrier has implemented LTE at sub-1GHz spectrum or not; For Malaysia, that means Webe (750 MHz) and DiGi (900 MHz) notworthy.gif

hopefully, Malaysian telcos will request the models with Qualcomm modems... (not holding my breath though)

I’ve updated my post above slightly to reflect how and where iPhone models are sold.

A1897 is 8 and A1905 is 8+?

Other way around; A1905 is 8 and A1897 is 8+.

New articles out after iPhone 8 launches worldwide:

DxOMark: iPhone 8 Plus is the best smartphone camera
(iPhone 8 is #2)

TomsGuide: iPhone 8 is world’s fastest phone
(Apple now makes the world’s top 3 fastest phones: X, 8/8+)

That's just not fair. ip8 just annihilate the new samsungs with a Bang! on raw power.

And that’s the Samsung Exynos (aka Global) model. The Qualcomm (aka US) models are slower than those ones, IINM.

Hi... I'm in US at the moment, thinking of picking up the iPhone 8 plus.
*
Last time I went to service my iPhone 6 Plus, the center told me they can only order a replacement iPhone that has the same model number as iPhones sold in Malaysia.

That means you should buy iPhones with an Intel modem inside, aka the T-Mobile or AT&T version. And only buy them from an Store at full retail price. Buy anywhere else, and it might be carrier-locked.

Do note that some other people have successfully claimed warranty for overseas models, but I think that they called Apple Support first (which may be able to override any policies restricting the service provider).

Ah yes this I knew. I think I was being unclear; what I meant was:

iPhones sold at Apple Retail Stores are factory unlocked. They activate the carrier lock during activation stage; if you didn’t buy at full retail.

If you buy at a carrier store, the iPhone might have to be manually unlocked by a carrier. Even if bought at full price. However, all of this is just my understanding so take it with a grain of salt.

QUOTE(zeroendless @ Sep 23 2017, 12:21 PM)
Technically, you can't buy carrier-locked phones as a foreigner in Trump Land. It required yearly contract for a new customer that you can't qualify or existing carrier account that you don't have. The only option is get the unlock version straight from Apple store.

Last time I bought iPhone 6 in Apple Store, US. It's worth it.
*
Coincidence haha, same story here. I got a 6 Plus but it was a Verizon model. Just took out the Verizon SIM. BTW, one good thing about Verizon models: they’re all factory unlocked (required by US law) even when bought with a contract.

QUOTE(Savor_Savvy @ Sep 23 2017, 06:56 PM)
Is it? I recalled my Ip6+ came with one pin ejector.
*
QUOTE(xisan @ Sep 23 2017, 06:59 PM)
Mine didn't have, iphone 6 and 6+. Not even have the slot to put it in the box.
*
US models come with a blank SIM already included in the slot. Phone plans are activated through the setup process, then the subscriber info is written to the blank SIM. That’s why US iPhones don’t come with SIM ejector.

I don't think you should compare the specs just like that... all online reviews say the chip and the camera are the biggest jump (compared to other features) over the previous gen...

should i fix my ip6+ touch ic and change new batt while waiting for iphone x or go for ip8+ right away? i know by buying iphone 8+ i might save 1k+.. but i lose out on the full screen view and probably better camera at iphone x.
*
iPhone 6+ has a repair program to fix screen: https://www.apple.com/my/support/iphone6plus-multitouch/

Will cost you rm 670, especially if they detect that it has been dropped or bent

can bring to any apple service centre? Are they going to change the screen or the touch IC only? BEcause if touch IC, outside shop can do 350 only..
*
Yeah, any Apple service center. However, you might have better luck if you contact Apple Support first. Tell them you have problem with your touch screen on iPhone 6+. If you've never dropped or bent the phone, tell them that too. They might be able to wave the fee.

I think it's the whole screen: display and touch subsystem are fused together

about ur apps on previous phone you can backup to your itunes, but latest itunes won't backup the app's IPA copy to your PC already.
After you done restoring your phone, those apps will auto download back the apps that your previous phone have. If you want to keep your whatsapp history, you have to backup in ur whatsapp's app to icloud first before you start to restore your current phone. Once you done restoring, the first time you open your whatsapp it will prompt a message to ask if you wanted to restore back your history.
*
QUOTE(M4A1 @ Oct 11 2017, 10:03 AM)
sorry not a IT savy here.
what you mean by IPA?
what you mean by restoring?
step by step..
1. I back up old phone to pc itune.
2. plug the new phone to pc itune and restore back ...and all my old apps will appear in my new phone right?
is that how it works?
*
latest itunes will only restore the user data only, not the app file itself. it will send the user data to the phone and then tell the phone to get the app from iOS App Store through the phone's connection.

to avoid this, you can search for iTunes 12.6.3 on support.apple.com. this iTunes is the last version to have the app syncing feature. as a bonus, apple will not show you any further update to iTunes if you install this version

Thanks all

This is an issue with iOS 11. For some reason apps will only download on Wi-Fi, even if you enable downloads via 4G and even if the app is less than 150MB.

nope. I set my dns to google servers. internet super quick. I can download a 200 MB apps through iTunes at 5 MBps over personal hotspot, but I can't do it on my iPhone itself. so lame.

Got a call from Maxis telesales promoting iPhone 8 64GB for existing subscribers of 188 MOP (but my contract has ended)... in which I don’t need to pay the advance device, straight up RM1,970 before tax without the RM954 advance ohmy.gif

Anyone else got this same exact call? Sounds too good to be true but I confirmed it with Maxis live chat.
*
probably because you kept paying on time? if you take it they probably sign you up for a new contract anyways.

Anyone know which Digi/Celcom outlet got stock for iP 8 Plus? Went to few outlets already, they just ask to wait & cannot pre-order.
*
Go to the iPhone page on Celcom store (eg. https://www.store.celcom.com.my/store/devic...roduct=MDR5589) then click Buy and Collect. Click your chosen colour. If got stock, it will show up like this:

Means the Celcom centre near you have no stock. This doesn't include Celcom agents, though. For that, you'll have to check manually.
